    Towing a Stag

I have recently purchased a Stag and it has started leaking petrol from the fuel line overflow at the front of the engine.
I believe that the problem is caused by the carburetor needle valves or the floats sticking!!
Its going into the garage to get fixed shortly.
My problem is that the car is in my garage (facing in) and will need to be towed out backwards in order to get it to the garage.
Does anyone know if there is a way of towing it backwards, and then forwards (tow points etc) as I can't see any points and I obviously don't want a tow rope to damage the car.

    Thanks for any help,

    John

If you trip the grey coloured inertia switch under the bonnet (opposite side to the servo) you can then run the engine until it cuts out. Switch off the ignition and reset the switch and turn the ignition back on. this will sometimes flush any debris and cure the problem. you may need to do it a couple times but if successful you will be able to drive the car safely again.

      Thanks Ian,

I'll give that a try, but as soon as I turn the ignition on the fuel pump starts and the fuel just pours out of the overflow!

Tripping the inertia switch will stop the fuel pump working and the car will empty the float chambers and stall after a while...........

EDIT: Whoops, Ian beat me to it!

If you trip the inertia switch as Ian said this cuts the power to the pump. You then start the engine and let it run, it will drain the fuel in the carburetters and then stop as it runs dry. When you then reset the inertia switch and turn on the ignition Ian is suggesting that the flow of fuel may flush out any dirt that was preventing the valves from sealing. As Ian says it is worth doing a couple of times.

Failing that if you trip the inertia switch and start the car you will at least be able to reverse it out of the garage before it runs out of petrol. It will then be much easier to find something at the front to tie onto.

To "trip" the inertia switch you just pull the little knob up, to reset press it down.

But if it comes to towing, the great thing about the proper bumpers on a Stag is that you can use the support brackets to tie a rope to, they are firmly attached to the integral chassis so will safely allow towing. Front or rear.

              Hello,
one the first changes I made to my Stag was to add a towing facility. See here: Abschleppöse.jpg
I thought it was a bit to optimistic of Triumph not to build one in.
Best wishes, Dieter - from Germany.

I wouldn't recommend this, tying anything to the bumper mounting brackets? You run a very high risk of bending them out of shape and /or twisting the bumpers.

                      HI

I did this and ended up with a bent bumper and had to get a replacement, Expensive tow.

Thanks to all of you who came up with the solution.
I did exactly what you said, turn off the fuel pump, run the floats dry and switch the pump back on and it's back to its former working glory. the pump again now switches off when the engine is not running.
Thank again from a very happy John
