getting the gearbox cross member off gives a lot better access for the sake of 6 nuts
similarly needed when changing a j-type solenoid (which can be done with the cross member in place) but connecting the electrics which is an absolute bugger to do without removing crossmember first.
you think the speedo cable is bad try drivers side engine mountStags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

Speedo cable? Piece of cake, try front cross member bolts by the power steering pipes, or gearbox to engine bolts!

Intuition says MOD but please make it clear in original post. On average most of us have BW35 or BW65 autoboxes!

But the position and access would be the same in any case, right adjacent to the "tunnel" with bad access!!

I struggled with the Man o/d gearbox a little (mainly on the bolts below the n/s head) but it wasnt impossible, nor even slightly close.
removed and reinstalled mine all by myself I didnt have a gearbox cradle but did have a chain hoist which lifted the gearbox through the gearstick hole on some sacrificial rope. A trolley jack stabilised the bellhousing just about where I wanted it, then from the tailshaft I twisted and pushed. More or less went straight on.
Agreed that it is much easier to mate to the engine on the deck and then install the pair together.
Come to think of it. Mating an engine to an installed manual gearbox? Dont bother! My neighbours certainly tired of the profanity. For the sake of 8 nuts, a speedo cable and some wiring remove the box and assemble it all on the floor.Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony

Certainly agree about it being possible to do the gearbox single handed. I just use a trolley jack and stacks of wood blocks while the car is up on axle-stands.
However, i think it is a fine line between taking the gearbox off with the engine in-situ, or just lifting the whole lot out and stripping it on the floor.
I would never consider taking out the engine alone.'72 Manual O/d Saffron Yellow
