What should I pay for an engine rebuild?

    Hi everyone,
The misfire on my Stag has been diagnosed as due to low compression on 2 cylinders aggravated by the use of French supermarket petrol - ethanol. My Stag specialist is saying that whilst the problem could be valves at 68k miles a rebuild would be justified. Cost estimates depending on what is found is a mere 5k to 6k. The advantage is of course I should 'know' I then will have a good engine all sorted.
Two thoughts come to mind. Is the cost about right?
Are rebuilt secondhand engines available from SOC members for less?
Would appreciate advice, comments and offers
    Nigel
Further thought - can I sell and cut my losses and find another Stag that is better? ( I have probably already spent more on the car than it's worth).

Well he would think a full rebuild is justified. I think price quoted is at top end. If adjacent cylinders are down it may be head gasket. Could also be valves. Top end rebuild would be a fraction of that cost. More detail needed.

My engine rebuild came to 5500 including removal and refit of engine, replacement of water pump with an EWP complete with controller, moved and uprated alternator, fitting of electric fan, Engine rebuild included tufridden and balanced crank, head skim and rebush for jack shaft and all fluids. Would have been around 4500 if just a straight rebuild. Price also included a revisit at 500 miles to re-torque head. Job done by EJ Wards.

Unfortunately the cylinders with low compression are on opposite sides. Otherwise I would also suspect a head gasket. I suspect valves as previous owner DID NOT use a lead additive.

As for rebuilding against top end only work with nearly 70 k miles is there not a risk that a new reinforced top may lead to bottom end issues?

I have a rebuilt unused engine that Ralph of rallyn motors built for himself but unfortunately passed away before he got to use it is complete with all ancillaries and
Has been bench run to check it over is mated to a recon bw35 auto gearbox
Was looking for 3000 no exchange needed

This is what faversham classics and robsport have told me. Both came up with six grand for a complete turn key job.

I have exactly the same dilemma as you.

I have been agonising over the options for a while and get equal numbers of opinions on both sides.
In the end I don't think you will get a definitive answer either way. You will just have to do what feels best to you.
At the moment I am on the side of the new engine!

Have found a reputable engine builder who can supply or rebuild your engine for 4000 with 12 months guarantee on an exchange basis
