    Towbar options / comments

    Hi,

I'd like to fit a towbar.

Rimmers at £200 inc or Watling ( www.watling-towbars.co.uk/ ) at £144. Both inc VAT but ex delivery.

Anyone have any comments / reviews / ratings on either of the above two or perhaps know of another source entirely?

    Thanks in advance

    David

I have 2. On the Rimmers one that l bought about 4 years ago, I found that the main bar that goes across from the left to right bumper fixings was not bent out enough so it just touched the rear of the car. I should have sent it back ! The other cars bar fits so much better. But l bought that in 1986 so don't ask me who made it ..... :-)

    Also as a small tip.

Buy a pre wired extension socket, cut off the plug and wire it up so that it lays in the boot and can be poked out of boot when needed. This will save drilling holes into the rear of the car.

On the subject of putting towbar related things in the boot, I always have a 7-pin / 13-pin adapter on board unless you know that it is always going to be the same trailer / cycle rack etc., which you will be using and not a hired / borrowed one.

There are often second-hand ones offered in the For Sale section. Mine was £50, fits properly and works well.
And I got to meet another decent Stag chap!

              Hi Ken.
That one from the TSSC is made by Wattling. But at least there is a photo of it.

              Anyone fitted one?

Yup Drew. l did that, but then l have lived in Switzerland where they also use the 13 pin system. Its been very slow to take off in the UK but is available. I fitted the 13 pin and have an adapter to 7 pin.

Also the 13 pin if fitted must work for an MOT !! not the 7 pin ??

I got mine from Rimmers, fitted Ok but is uglier than some others I've seen. As I don't use it very often these days I welded the fixings nuts to the boot floor and remove it when it's not needed. To re-fit it I just simply bolt it back into place. The bit behind the bumper obviously stays on the car permanently.

I was able to buy a Witter many years ago - excellent; now on its second car. I have seen them for sale on the forum or Ebay - might be worth looking out for one.

                        Thanks all for the feedback.

I have ordered one from Watling Engineering. Partly as they were lower cost than Rimmers, and also because they have "Engineers" in their name so perhaps it will actually fit!
I love the idea of a trailing socket coiled up in the boot ready for deployment Thanks Malc4d).
When combined with the other idea of captive nuts for the boot floor section of the towbar means the towbar can be easily removed and refitted when needed. Brilliant. Thanks DaveM
Finally, I'll order one of those 7 to 13 pin adapters. None of my trailers have 13 pin electrics but as Drew says, you never know if you might borrow one.

Lets hope it all gets fitted easily.
