    DIF whining

    Looking for good replacement original MK 2 auto dif, failing getting replacement can anyone recommend someone to recon?

    Assuming I need to change! Noise occurs around 60 Mph under load! Is it the dif gearing or just bearings?.

    I am a newbie but have been told that even a recondidtioned one can whine. It appears to be a common problem, I have it too. I have been wondering about fitting a limited slip diff but they are not cheap.

      It is unfortunate that we seem to have lost all the experienced diff rebuilders in the United Kingdom. I have an on-going problem with mine.
      I have been told that Paddocks have some rebuilt diffs with new CW&P which are quiet.
      There's also EJ Wards who apparently have new CW&P (which they famously didn't fit on the Trans-America Stag) but I hear they are even less cheap.

        Hi Mal, If you are considering a diff' change how about a 3.45 from a 2.5 Mk2 S saloon or estate to improve the overall gearing. Just a thought.

            What and lose out on acceleration? IMHO part of the pleasure of driving a Stag and vital for survival on UK roads. Driving in NZ is a pleasure in itself but since the national speed limit is 100kph (62mph) I cannot really see the point of upping the ratios there let alone here.

            For higher ratios without compromising performance then the MOD does this as standard - otherwise the ZF 4 speed autobox swap I believe does something similar.

              3.45:1 diff and ZF 4-speed. Still surprises many moderns at the traffic light Grand Prix.

                Niss.
                A limited slip diff will still need a good/silent Stag crown wheel and pinion, if you are thinking have one assembled in your Stag housing, ready to fit. It is only the "Differential" gears that are replaced with a locking system in a limited slip version.

                  These are the TR4A ones, which are already horrible, note how the hardening has gone through with the misalignment in about 1500kms.

                  I had to replace the entire internals on this one, and deliver personally to the south of France.

                  The stag ones are just plain rubbish.

                    come on geeza, we all know everything on the stag is sh...t you keep telling us :P

                    why not contribute to how OP might fix his whining diff rather than telling us everything is sh..t? eh?

                    The diff nose bearing does have a habit of chewing out bearings, I had a poor quality supply issue years ago, they only lasted maybe a few thousand miles before they started to growl again.

                    If the diff is coming off anyway, take a look into the diff nose housing around the quill shaft, if there is a build up of wet grease then the bearing may have failed. easy enough to replace once the diff is out anyway.

                    Setting up a diff with new crownwheel etc is a faff and specialist job, folk who used to do this seem to have gone the same way as the autobox specialists. as stuff in the marketplace becomes less rubbish (eh DTPH ) demand for specialists becomes less so and the shut up shop. Paradoxically folk who now need this service have to pay those specialists more to do the job proper

                    Options would seem to be
                    1. change fluid and live with it
                    2. search out a quiet "er" diff second hand, they do exist. I had an auto diff in my garage until a few years ago. sold it though when I went Man O/D
                    3. pay EJWard etc good money for a good diff
                    4. go down the BMW diff route

                      Did you get the less than subtle message?

                      YOU FIT ORIGINAL OEM PARTS, and rebuild the thing properly.

                      Go ask Marcus up in "scaryport"
                      he's a nice guy and appears to know what he's doing.
