Diff Backlash - a possible cause, and its solution - in pictures!

As a parting shot, I thought I might give a view on diff backlash, and how you can fix it yourself subject to it being the reason...

Excuse the filming - For The Love Of Cars it ain't.....

As you may have seen from another thread, this video shows the external symptoms

    Now to go inside....

The parts are on order, so if they arrive in time I'll show you how to put them back in...

Yup - and the elephant has brothers so we'll see if the parts are any good

Kryten - really useful videos thanks for posting.

Question from ignorance, if that's OK? Are the thrust washers standard sizes or do you have to mic the planet wheel gaps and order accordingly?

I will give you a hint.
ALL the diff shims were made in the Royal Mint in LLanishen.

                Here is the elephant.

Thrust Washer - Planet Gear - 0.069 to 0.071 No Longer Available
Thrust Washer - Planet Gear - 0.057 to 0.059 No Longer Available
Thrust Washer - Planet Gear - 0.061 to 0.063 No Longer Available
Thrust Washer - Planet Gear - 0.065 to 0.067 No Longer Available
ALL THE RIGHT SIZE SHIMS neccessary to rebuild them are gone, good luck to find some NOS.

The proper brass/bronze sunwheel shims have not been available for decades which is why everyone and their dog is now selling the totally sh..t fibre ones,

which you guessed, always break up.

Now you know why I don't want to rebuild those diffs any more. NO PARTS.

I am toying with producing my own in brass - these have gone again in my 2.5pi diff fitted to my own Stag - the fibre ones didn't last very long when giving it some stick

I have just a FEW of the original brass TR3-6 ones left.
You are welcome to use them as patterns to make some new FLAT ONES.

The smart thing is making them slightly thinner so you can use the LARGE (normally unuseable) 072"+ planet shim range or slightly thicker so as you can use the lower planet shim range of 0.052"+ until someone exhausts those stocks.

When the TR planet shims are worn thin, they often can get reused in the GT6/Spitfire axles, which guess what, have EXACTLY the same problems!
The Spitfire 1500 axles were just all crap, for this very reason.

Now you know why I was so relieved to have a salisbury LSD in my car.
No more of this nonsense, and as the carrier was of higher quality, no spun carrier bearings either....

                        just saying...

Not many Dave, unless you find them elsewhere - won't be able to post them here, as won't be a member of the forum

Thanks Gareth - I'll bear that in mind, I can use the fibre ones as a pattern, and I've ordered a few different gauges of brass sheet - see how it works out...
