Broken Drag Strut Roll Bar Link

    Hi all

Many informative posts on this subject so thanks again for all that advice. This forum has been invaluable to me during my short ownership of my Stag.

This happened today. As I have seen in all the previous posts, a common occurrence. What's irritating is this is 2 months old and only has 200 miles on it.

Has anyone found a good replacement drag strut (reinforced?) or is it the weld and reinforce an existing one? It's hard to tell if any of the Rimmer Bros, Paddock's or LD Parts ones are different, better, worse or the same.

    Thanks

    Jeff

hi Jeff bad luck or good luck ,the brake is the ARB joint so that was lucky the break that is more common is the other end where the fork lugs shear this can be very serious indeed as the bottom assembly is now detached and at high speed i shudder to think!
the repair i would advise is to weld doubling plates on that end with a tig welder to guarantee no inclusions and a solid attachment this will double reinforce an area subjected to fatigue .as for the ARB link just repair the existing with a new lug slightly thicker welded in same place .and i would do both

      Hi Steve

Thanks very much indeed for the advice. I didn't know this was the better of two possible breaks and thank my lucky little stars it was.

I'll look into finding a friend with a Tig welder!

It's a shame no-one does routine crack testing before selling safety critical parts like this one.

I agree. Impossible to tell once they have been painted to look nice.

I am really surprised this broke, especially as we were only going around a roundabout at about 10mph and heard a clunk. No pothole or other jarring event.

I broke my right drag strut last Sunday, this was not so critical as the bottom link kept the wheel about right, just had to be careful when applying brakes

So, i will change both, here they are, ready to be mounted

If you reinforce the strut, do not use too thick steel as I found after I did mine that the drop link started to rub when turning or over bumps

Thanks Andrew. I am going to try a Rimmer Bros one first and see how it lasts. I'll report back.

Where did you get the new ones? I think the one I have on mine does not appear to have the reinforced plate near the link.

                  Thanks

I have just fitted my two struts this morning. One was from Rimmer Bross ( LH ) other one from LDParts.
Not a too hard job, about one hour for each side

Thanks Guerpillon. Will be doing mine from Rimmer this weekend, weather and skill dependant...

For my part, i strictly followed the Repair Operations Manual, particularly about the fitting direction of the rubbers, hope it was right as i have read different opinions about it on this forum.
Drag struts reçeived from both Rimmer and LDParts were of a red primer color, i have painted them green as my car ils BRG, British Racing Green.

ROM tells to put the rubber bushes round faces to the car, flat faces to shims, this seems to be OK as the chassis has indeed semi-globe apertures.
However, Haynes manual and some others tell to put the rubber bushes flat faces to car.

                          So ?

My copy of the ROM says to put the flat faces to the car which is the way I've always done it.

I am doing mine this weekend, will take a photo of the way it was installed by Faversham in July. I have seen this has been discussed a lot on the forum.
