    Emergency bonnet release kit

Having read the snippet about modifying the bonnet release mechanism on page 38 of the current issue of the club magazine I looked at Rimmers website to see what was available to do the mod. I noticed the "Emergency bonnet release kit" part 630573EBR on this page https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID005389

It's on the Stag page but says TR4-6. Has anyone bought and installed this in a Stag?

Hi Steve, I got from a Mk2 saloon, a complete assembly. The cable, the interior bracket and the fitting on the end of the cable. easy to fit, EXCEPT for drilling the tongue of the release arm. It is extremely hard. I think I ended up using a tipped masonry drill with cutting fluid. The other advantage is it provides a r/hand side bonnet release.

I did this earlier this year. I had to take a Dremel to grind the surface of the 'tongue' as it's hardened steel as Ian found, and then patiently drilled through the bracket. The rest is just a bike brake cable from Halfords and a couple of cable guides and pinch bolts.

It's routed through another existing hole in the bulkhead, running alongside the main cable, tied off for easy release just behind the main handle's mounting bracket. I might put something on the end just to make it easier to pull (it just has a nubbin on the end which would have been fitted to a bike brake handle).

Granted mine's not the prettiest setup but it works.

(BTW, the restorer had already refitted the original cable on the 'wrong' RHS.)

This is mine - no tongue drilling required. Got a bonnet release cable from LD Part and managed to get the correct bracket for under the dash (tapped receivers already present). Design was my mechanic's, though would need modifying if stranded cable used. Very useful having a release on the driver's side - use it most of the time.

Just get some stainless bolts and drill a few holes:

The above pictures are of my first Stag and are dated 2004, although it was fitted much earlier than that. I transferred the kit to my current Stag back in 2008.

As stated above, the moveable arm is case hardened and it may be necessary to use a Dremel, or similar grinder, to break through the surface before a drill bit will bite.

After you have sorted the bonnet how about considering the hood release alternatives? Similar release problem, - velcro seat retaining fastenings, so the seat back pulls off.

For the hood, I have found that full 3-point belts make the fastening of the seat back unnecessary.

For the the hood release problem, I have installed a small removable hatch in the rear bulkhead large enough to get my hand through to reach the catch. The boot carpet covers modification and is hidden.

Hi Steve I made the posts, out of a bit of silver steel, will try and find my drawing Phil or measure it when I get time, the little nipples on the ends of the cables (A Fail Safe) were made from a m6 stainless bolts and polished taped m3.

Regards the bonnet release I know a some owners have used a pull cable and handle inside the front wheel arch , it provides a nice straight action if something does seize its nice to pull head on.
