Dismantling the steering rack: I need your experience please

I have now tried to dismantle the steering rack but failed. In order to open the big nut which connects the cylinder with the endhousing I bought a C-spanner. But even with an extension of 50 cm (20") I had no success. Do you have any experience with this problem? Is the solution to warm the casted steel endhousig up or stretch/elongate it with the tip of a hammer?
Any help from those who have done the job?

All the pictures I've seen of rack overhauls, hasn't shown this bit taken apart. Does it need to be?

Al, it is shown on some picture series in forum threads.
Section 57.10.07 in the ROM "Dismantling" explains it under no. 9. W/o dismantling this part it is impossible to withdraw the rack shaft.

I have rebuilt 2 racks without the benefit of a C spanner. I just used a blunt chisel to knock the threaded ring loose which worked both times.
It might well be the shock of hitting it works better than a steady force being applied, as happens in many other attempts to get stuck things apart.

Not having a C spanner either, that is the method I used, but with a 6” length of steel rod as a drift.

I used a C-spanner, which I purchased specially for this purpose, and a length of tube and had no problem removing the ring.
Due to leaking problems (see my thread) I had to take it apart 3 times.

                Many thanks all.
I have a spare rack and the nut has obviously been "maltreated" with a chissel or alike (left pics, on the right my rack waiting to be opened). Seems to be the way to go. I admit it's not the way I like.

Just out of interest Bob, Dave & Neil, did you employ the 'hammer & chisel' due to the absence of a C-Spanner, or because the C-Spanner didn't work?
