    Excellent work, Drew.

Worryingly, though, I see there is evidence of some... <cough> dust in your Stag - on the floor.

Dust ...... enemy N°1 I'm afraid. I'm continually using the beadblaster and dust is unavoidable. I used to cover up the car with an outdoor garage (when I thought about it in time...).

To make it easier, I've now bought one of those indoor silky cloth/elastic ones on the basis I can wash it occasionally. To my horror I've now noticed that the dust creeps in from everywhere and settles, even if the dust cover is on! It's really annoying, but I can't control it better than I am as I need access to all parts of the car all the time.

Refurbed and fitted the steering column today - tough going after having got back home at 4 a.m. !

I'd retrieved those little metal plates from the disintegrated original column bearings. Not sure what they are for, but fitted them to the repro sleeves anyway.

To fit the bearing sleeves I tried a couple of different methods before doing it this way, with one of those clawed retrievers:

It is imperative, in my opinion, to chamfer the end of the inner column tube, so that it will pass through those nylon bearing sleeves and not just push them out of place.

All in all, with plenty of grease and a bit of oil, the repro sleeves do seem to fulfil their role.

I fitted one of those top bearing screw collars too. I found a piece of tubing wich fitted like it was designed for the purpose. I could then press the thrust washers together nicely (not tooooo much!) before tightening up the three grubscrews.

It took me a while to figure out what was going on with that steering column but I got there in the end! Nice work, Drew!

Best wishes for a happy, healthy new year.

Thanks Paul. Yeah, it's sometimes a decision whether to post a couple of happy snaps or do a blow-by-blow account. As some of the older folk have attention span problems I've reverted to the happy snaps mode!

              Here is today's happy snap:

and tonight's conundrum to see if people have been paying attention on the Forum and know what these bits are! Note to self: must really regrind my lathe tools!

                  If they're about 1" diameter then I think I know - if they're not then I haven't got a clue.

                  Cheers

OK Dave, just as it's you, I'll give you another chance at the coconut. I bought this yesterday for the Stag. Let's see if you can guess why! It's been mentioned on the Forum at least once, although not by me.

Could this be a shaft that's going to be sacrificed for priming the oil pump?
