I managed to true the manifold faces which cured the leak. I filled up with antifreeze and all was good.
I went back into the barn 3 hours later to double check and discovered 3 additional leaks from 3 of the 4 head core plugs!!
again I don’t understand why they are leaking as they never leaked before and they have not been touched

As I posted earlier the plugs on the exhaust side of my newly rebuilt engine leaked on initial start up and for the first few days. I wondered if the sealant the machine shop used eventually worked its magic once it went through a few heat cycles. Did you use any kind of sealant?

I was concerned and posted about it and apparently it’s just about possible to replace them in situ.

Yes I used Wellseal, that is what you can see oozing out between the manifold/head.
the core plugs are accessible so maybe best to replace them.

Maybe use some anaerobic sealant? That’s what I used for the core plugs I installed to delete the water pump. I’m not sure welseal is ideal.. I may be wrong.

              That’s odd… I am repeating myself !!!
I have not heard of anaerobic sealant, I will look it up.
              Thanks Terry

I used this on my maifolds. Never had any leaks and i will be using it on my next rebuild , wipe on like you are trying to wipe off is a good discription of use.

                  Thanks Edd,
You got me thinking so Earlier I went into my garage to look through my consumables, I found a tube of Reinsosil which I bought at the start of the year,
I pulled the engine out of my Mk1 lotus Cortina to replace the water pump. I ended up stripping the engine and rebuilding it. When I got it back in and running I had a small leak coming from the cork gasket between the sump and block behind the pulley. I used the Reinzosil which cured it.

On Monday I ordered 3 core plugs and a tube of locktite 648 to replace the weeping plugs, Yesterday I wiped away the water in the vee and and topped up the radiator, tonight I checked and the core plugs are still dry and there is no water in the Vee.
                  HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN...???

Wilf, yep I think you could be right!!!
I have not replaced them but now have spare plugs should they need replacing. I was hoping to have the engine running by Christmas but due to work commitments/busy social diary I will be lucky if I have it running by the new year.

From an earlier thread: Loctite 648

When the first one popped out, my first thought was "I've bodged the core plugs and not stuffed them in tight enough!. So I checked the second plug and it was certainly hammered in but, on reflection, the rim was almost flush with the cylinder head surface.

I also feared a size problem and ordered up different core plug sizes from different sources and also in metric to see if another size would fit, but no other size was "just a bit tighter".

Another factor is that there are two schools of thought on banging them in: a) with a mandrel in the plug which fits snugly but not so snugly that it will be trapped and b) a mandrel which sits on the rim of the plug, the idea being that method a) will cause the plug to decrease in diameter a bit as it sort of collapses on the mandrel.

So, I've now cleaned up the head holes so they're squeaky clean with no burrs etc., made mandrels which sit in the plug but which work by pressing on the rim, I've smeared them with Loctite 648 which is a sealant/adhesive for press fit cylindrical metal parts, and I've hammered them in so they are just a midge further in than the head surface.

Maybe I just didn't hammer them in far enough, or they got pinched up because I used a mandrel in the centre of the plug?

Thanks for the ideas and clues guys.

+1 for Reinsosil local machine shop rates it very highly and it works for almost all types of application.

                            A little bit further along..
Between Christmas & new year I did manage to get into the garage. One of the jobs to do before I can attempt to start the engine is to refit the dash so I can fit the steering column and ignition switch.

It was surprisingly rusty so I went at it with a wire brush in an air drill.

                            Partially masked off for painting.

Painted with an etch primer and silver wheel paint, it was only 8 degrees in there so had the fan on all day prior to painting.

I had to mask this off....... probably never to be seen again, has anyone found this on their dash when removed??

The window demister strip was rusty, I stripped the paint off, it has been soaking it in Evapo-rust for the last 10 days, It will be painted tonight ready to refit the dash soooooon.
