Cylinder Heads and studs - again

    Dear All
I am in the process of sorting my family Stag ( been in the family since 1972) and regrettably it was stored with water in the cooling - which got into the cylinders. I am trying to remove the heads and have all the bolts out but two snapped studs in one and 3 snapped in other . I have read people have made a pushing frame and would be interested in borrowing/ hiring such a thing is someone has made one . Also any advice as to how best to get the heads off appreciated given the snapped studs issue thanks James

I had a similar issue when I set about removing my cylinder heads, 3 studs and 1 bolt sheared on the RH head 2 studs on the LH head.

Unfortunately I did not have access to a head puller so I resorted to the "rope" method as described here http://www.tscusa.org/tech/cylinder_head_removal.asp .

A little frightening at first but it worked without any damage to ancillary components.

      Thanks Nigel,
As the engine is seized I can't try the rope trick so need to pull or push the heads off .I am hoping to borrow a tool for this rather than make one up- anyone have such a tool to hire/borrow ?.

In our much under-used and unfortunately overlooked Forum Technical Section there is more info on head removal and different pullers and pushers.

Thanks Drew - I had looked at this very good section and hope to find a pusher or puller to borrow rather than to duplicate what other will have on a shelf somewhere.

                James,

I have the full kit which can be borrowed. This includes heavy angle iron and large bolts, c/w spanner, for pushing one head against the other. This was the only thing that worked to remove the heads on my Stag engine.

The whole kit is very heavy, but you are welcome to borrow it any time.

                            no time wasted here

I used Paul Goldstars pusher with a bottle jack

                            very effective but same process.

observations from me on the whole exercise.

I jacked the head until the exhaust manifold wouldnt allow it to be jacked any further. i.e. it was too close to the chassis rail

In the process of the arc movement I bent the upper cam sproket support bracket which was unnecessary! suggest you avoid this by removing chains and brackets first. obviously get to TDC before starting. No real hardship as I suspect you will be fitting chains at same time

when I had jacked the head high enough I was wary of marking the mating face of the head with my hacksaw, if I were doing this again I would find a nice bit of sacrificial steel, cut a slot in it to got around the offending stud and push it up against the underside of the head. This would allow me to cut as close to the head as possible without damaging it. you need a fair length of stud to get your extractor onto. the more the better

Always good to have feedback on how a task went Richard! You are right that the clearance between head and the sprocket support is quite minimal - even when taking off an un-corroded head.

On the bit about protecting the heads when sawing the studs, that is described in the Head Removal 'instruction' in our technical section.

                              Cheers
