Mark 1 / Mark 2 - to be or not to be?

Being a new Stag owner and newbie to the murky world of which Stag bit will go wrong first my thoughts about should I get a Mark 1 or Mark 2 have been confirmed today.

Apparently I own a half and half. LD 25368, late December registered 1973. Many thanks to a fellow SOC friend who looked at my car today and found a mish mash or parts from Mk1 and Mk2 – I think my nickname now for the old girl now is schizophrenia!

Let’s hope I have all the good bits of each version – shame it doesn’t qualify though for road fund exemption

Hello Mark and welcome to the wonderful world of the Mk 1.5. Triumph never designated the Stags as Mk1 and Mk2. The Mk 1 Stags have LD numbers beginning 1. The updates and changes to create a full Mk2 happened over quite a period of time, so we have to check what upgraded bits we have each time we go to order something. You will get used to it.

        and so am i

My stag is a mk1 1/2 export model in rhd, built August 73 and shipped around the world before getting a Coventry reg in dec 73.

Took me first few years of ownership to find that mk2 USA heater wiring diagram was the closest I out get to that in my car.

I notice you've spelled it correctly - that's slightly worrying ! I've got it, but I can't remember if it's fish or, errr, I forget

According the the Haynes manual, my Stag has the wiring loom from a LHD model!

Good job these are simple old things at heart.

There are too many differences for me to list between mk1 and 2 maybe someone with more patience than me will be along.
But IIRC a mk1 and half is identified by being predominantly a mk2 but having mk1 doors and striker plates and mk2 dials in a mk1 wooden fascia with no seatbelt warning light.
Mind you i dont know if federal stags are different.
                  How sad am i?
I need to find a new hobby.

Thanks Andy, that seems to sum why lump of British metal up fairly well. Should be fun when ordering parts for it! What was that 1970's song by Johnny Cash about a car made up from bits and pieces called?

At least it’s the original colour code - 64

                      Hi Mark,

My Stag is a close relative of yours and we only live a few of miles apart. my car is LD25394 only 26 cars between them on the production line and also a 1.5 car:

Mk 1 body shell (door locks)
Mk 1 dash with black rimmed Mk 2 clocks but no Hazards or seat belt light
Mk 2 bootlid, No plate lights in boot not on bumper
                      Mk 2 cooling system
Mk 2 charging system (18 ACR alternator)
Mk 2 seats with head rest and door cards
Interior light fitted in T Bar
                      Black badges
Stromberges with temperature compensators and later type air filter case

There are lot's more but these are the most obvious things off the top of my head, maybe one day the two cars can have a family reunion

I think you are wrong about the door locks. On the in between model most parts were Mk2 locks, seats dash etc.
The dash was modified a couple of times on the Mk2 with subtle upgrades.
The alloys were optional and the no oversills but a chrome strip above the sill.
Lots of other differnces as well.

The first mk2 cars definitely had mk1 door locks / strikers.

The so called mk2 cooling system was fitted to (uk) mk1 cars built from late 1971 onwards (though they initially had the early manifold).

Mine is also a MK1.5. first reg 1st dec 1973. has thin chrome moulding to top of sills MK1 rather than wide sill covers of MK2. It does have the number plate lights in the boot lid MK2 rather than the bumper bar MK1. It also has single bar door lock operation (Mk1 i believe) not twin (MK 2)and it has light in tee bar not be posts. It has M2 dash and black badges rather than the silver mk1 version.
It also had MK2 clocks but no seat belt warning or hazard flashers
It will have MK1 interior because thats what I just bought.... have no idea what was in there because there was none when I acquired the car
