Ive been removing the damaged sound deading pads from the floors, to repaint the floors, do they actually make any difference, as far as i can see all they do is trap water and create rust, what do you guys think
Dave there are two types, 1. The the hard ones without foam, and 2. the foam backed.
The hard ones are to reduce the vibration of the panels, and the foam backed are to reduce noise transmission eg through the firewall. I think they do help a lot to quieten the noises.
Mine had bitumen matting on the floors, transmission tunnel and inside the doors and rear wings and the foam backed stuff on the firewall.
I don't know whether that was an original fit, or later install as it had to varying degrees, from over spray to dedicated coat, been sprayed when the car had bodywork done some years ago.

its the hard ones i was on about, take your point about reduce the vibration, but doesn't the carpet with the sound deading pad on the back do that,i noticed Drew in his thread used a silver pad may be a newer design

Mine has the same on the transmission tunnel and floors, looks like i have court mine just in time only a couple off small rust holes, not enough to change the floors

thanks Dave
Dave, The felt or foam backed material is there to reduce the sound transmission, not the vibration. The pads help reduce and deaden the vibration. So the two used together keeps the noise down. The bitumen pads I use are non-absorbent so they do not hold moisture unlike carpets and foam.

ive not used the newer type pads,im only going on about the old pads ive removed, and im sure water must get behind them and that's why the floor rust out,but technology must move on after 40 odd years thanks for you help
On mine the factory installed pads under the back seat had let water underneath and it was a cullindar. I had to replace the whole section. Recoated both sides with spray-on underseal.
