Hi,
I've just bought a 1975 mk2 auto and drove it 80 miles home last weekend. There was a bit of a noise from the rear that got progressively worse - quite loud and intrusive, not a whine. When I reversed it onto the drive I could also hear a gritty, cracking noise from the back. I've jacked the rear up and there's quite a lot of backlash in the diff but I couldn't feel anything in the UJ's. I drove it again and noticed that the noise goes away on the overrun, doesn't alter going around corners so Im thinking this is more diff related than UJ's. Would you agree? I'm prepared to replace the diff is that's the problem (not up to rebuilding it) but don't want to spend all that money if it could be something simpler. Are there any other checks that I can make without dismantling the rear axle? Thanks for any advice or suggestions that you can give.
I'll probably post later about the working/non-working/working wipers!
Many thanks
Jon
