    Rumble from rear

I've had a (well documented on here) vibration from the rear at 60 and above and, having replaced literally everything in sight apart from the rear wheel bearings and drive shafts I noticed yesterday that my right hand bearing has some play in it.
if I grab the wheel at top and bottom and move it in and out there is play of around 2.00mm (max) but if I do the same from the sides there is no real movement - this makes me think that bearing may well be shot with all the wear concentrated on the points where the weight of the car rests. The LH bearing seems fine.

    Would my theory sound right?

Problem is I have Datsun driveshafts with bigger u/j's than standard so I'm tempted to dispense with and replace with a set of CD developments cv jointed units and new bearings - I'm not happy with rebuilding what must be quite old hubs.

    Cheers
    Mike

Mike, have you still got the vibration?

    Cheers

      Depends whether you want originality
Technically I think your choice is best even if they are a bit pricey

        Hi Keith and John,

yes Keith, still got it and John, not bothered about originality for drive shafts or hubs, particularly as my drive shafts now are Datsun ones anyway - pity is the driveshafts are 100% but the hubs I feel are not.

I though you cured the vib Mike and it was down to clutch cover bolts being too long or was that someone else?

That was part of the problem Steve but unfortunately that rumble was a separate one - the one from the rear is still there.
As it really only comes in at over 60 and is worse when it's been used a few miles I'm thinking maybe the wheel bearing could be it.......?
Nothing else I've replaced has eliminated it and that includes diff, prop, diff extension and bearing, new wheels, tyres, all balanced and re- balanced all diff, subframe and box mounting bushes plus engine mounts. The list is endless!

Its a centrifugal type imbalance rumble which is there on the overrun with the clutch depressed and the engine at idle.

It does help the econonmy though as I rarely exceed 60 now

Hi Mike, are the hubs the same as standard on your car but with different ujs? If so, I have 2 spare hubs and you could try one as I doubt you would have 2 noisy hubs. I also have another complete shaft with hub attached you could try so wouldn't cost you a penny. Let me know

I can't remember back far enough to the last wheel nearing I had go but if it's the wheel bearing doesn't it rumble at all speeds only getting worse the faster you go. Have to admit play in the wheel sounds like wheel bearing but the symptoms of noise don't necessarily, Mike.

                  Hi Andrew,
my hubs are standard (I think) but the UJ's are larger and not the usual circling type so, It's possible I could change one whole unit with shaft to test....That may be a good idea, appreciate that

I think if I listened close enough that may well be the case but not totally sure

OK Mike, Ill bring it along the hub/driveshaft club night unless you would like it earlier. I dont know much about the history of it as its been a spare for some years but it should at least instantly rule out a noise or have a different one instead
