    Smokey engine when hot

my stag had started to smoke on acceleration when it’s warmed up. It’s fine on tick over when hot and when cold. There’s no obvious noise from engine and no loss of power. Any ideas.

Are you having to top up the oil? Does the smoke have a blue tinge to it? If so then you're burning some oil as it heats and thins, most commonly through wear of the valves and/or piston rings. If you're getting around 500 miles/pint of oil you can live with it for quite a long time. A few pints of oil per year is much cheaper than a rebuild! Try switching to a zinc-based oil brand such as Valvoline VR-1, much favoured amongst Stag and other classic owners.

Colour and smell are the important bits.

Black smoke : too rich a mixture
Blue smoke : worn rings and or valve guides
Grey smoke : just old carbon burning off - car needs driving harder more often!
Thick White smoke : You have just put some diesel in the tank by mistake.
White smoke : if with sweet smell might be blown head gasket and burning coolant in one cylinder.

Try cleaning out your breather system, it may be part choked and increasing crank case pressure, forcing oil past rings and guides.

What grade oil are you using? Always surprising what a difference this can make.
