Stag Carburretor Choices

Up to you of course Terry, but I personally probably wouldn't post details to all the world about when no-one was going to be at home and for how long and where the car will be stored locally. Same goes, by the way, for luggage labels which announce to everyone at the airport where there's going to be an unattended domicile!
Obviously, I may be paranoid; but just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!

Appreciate your concern Drew, but it's not like a house, it's an apartment in a complex where we have lots of friends who pass by our door all the time, and know when we are in and not. We also own the apartment next door to the one we live in, and have a long term renter family in there, and they will be keeping a close eye on it while we are away, as will several other neighbours.

The garage where the Stag is going is not open to the general public, and can only be accessed with those who have a key, and some of the people who live in the apartments directly above the garage area, are friends and know me and my car, and will be in and out in their own car while we are away and will keep an eye on it also (and I always remove the earth key, and it is a RH drive vehicle).

We also have security personnel and video surveillance on our complex every day/night, and there is always someone on duty 24/7. That's not saying something can't happen of course, but we do fly in and out of Tenerife lots of times each year (visiting family or friends in the U.K., or going on vacation), and always make sure most of our neighbours, and the complex management, know where we are, how to contact us, and to take appropriate action if they see or hear anything they shoudn't in our home, oh, and we do have a local Policeman who lives in one of the apartments in our block.

Of course you lose some of your privacy when you live on a residential or tourist complex, but we don't mind that, and the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, even though some neighbours you would prefer to live elsewhere, and some holidaymakers can occassionally cause trouble, but it is a family complex, not a place that attracts Hen and Stag parties and groups of young men or young girls who spend their time drinking.

PS. After finishing this afternoon's meeting, I had to go into town for something, and am still recovering from the "Flu", so no time to take the Stag on a run today, but it is a Bank Holiday tomorrow (and another one on the 8th), so the roads will be quieter then, and probably a better time to do it.

Through out this long thread I notice one conversion has not appeared and that is what I have fitted on my car. It is a 4 barrel Elidelbrock on a custom 7 degree adapter. Very pleased with it, easy to tune and stays tuned.

Hi Ian,

Which model Edelbrock is it you have please and is the adapter the same as the one Monarch sold for fitting the Holley (as I have one of those)?

Hi Mike, It is a 1404 Performer with a manual choke although the same carb is available with an electric auto choke. Our very good Stag parts man, John Parker, here in NZ developed this conversion and a number of NZ cars have been done. John developed a pattern and had some adapters cast and then machined them and offered them as a kit. The carb, (500cuft), suitably rejetted for the smaller V8.
I have no idea if the footprints of the two carbs is the same and will fit each others adapters.
Unfortunately John has retired from this position and no longer offers this conversion.
If you have any other questions I will try to answer them.

Hi Ian,
Is that the John Parker from Tauranga whose wife was once President of the NZ SOC, and he has a french blue Stag that he took me out in when we visited your Country a few years back.
If it is, say hello from me, he even took us in his home for a drink whilst my wife and I were there, and his neighbour was Ian Skene in whose Stag my wife was driven when we all went out in a convoy of Stags to Rotorua. There were several Stags went on that run, was yours one of them? Below is a pic of them all outside Rotorua Museum.

Did manage to take the Stag out for a good run today, in warm, fine, but somewhat cloudy weather.
Car ran great on all types of roads, and when I got back and checked, it doesn’t seem to have lost any oil.
Oil pressure guage showed what it has always normally showed, between 40 & 50 lbs/sq.in when revved, a little less at tickover.

Very responsive to throttle openings, and changing up better than it did at first, although a little more adjustment to the kickdown cable may yet be needed. My old Strombergs were probably quite worn, which might or might not explain why the Weber feels quicker.

Had the dashcam switched on during the run, but I forgot to clean the windscreen beforehand, so the video might not be as clear as it could be, but will shortly edit and upload it to YouTube and provide a Link on here. Maybe later today or tomorrow as out running a Quiz tonight in a local Bar.

Yes that is the same Joan and John. Unfortunately John has a degenerative spinal disease and has to move about on two sticks. The Stag has had to be moved on because he could no longer look after and maintain it.
Joan is still Club Secretary but she is looking to pass that on shortly. A lovely couple who have put many many years into the club and of course John's encyclopedic knowledge and experience of the Stag.
I wasn't on the Rotorua run my car was probably still off the road.

Just uploaded the video of today's Stag run to YouTube.
It is just over 15 minutes long, but there is some interference on sound in parts, which I think maybe is something in the engine that needs suppressing, or behind the dash, I do have a suppessor on the coil.

Journey starts off from home into Los Cristianos, then a short Motorway run, then along some rural roads passing through Galletas and Las Chafiras before heading into the hills on a back road to Buzanada. From Buzanada heading for home I take a little used back road that runs parallel to the Motorway, which I use a lot when testing things out on the Stag. As I said in my previous post the car performed well, just wish I could find and get rid of whatever is interfering with the sound on the Mobius dashcam, I could always add some music later to overide it?

Alan, That van should not have been overtaking where he was, if the police had been there he would have been done. Over here you have to leave at least an arms length width I think it is when overtaking a cyclist, and wait for something coming the other way to have cleared before doing so. It wasn't me who hit the horn but him. Most drivers adhere to this rule, even if it means waiting some time before you can overtake, and creating a bit of a tailback.

It's getting warmer by the day now, we won't be here this Xmas ourselves, but I do feel sorry for Father Xmas who hands out presents to the children round our Pool on Xmas Day, all dressed in those thick clothes and thick beard on what is nearly always a really hot day! Glad you enjoyed the video, the Mobius dashcam provides good quality video in all light conditions, and at just £50 (with all the attachments) it was a snap, and in an accident could prove invaluable.

Have to say that a 500cfm carby looks to be on the large side for TV8. I had a 750cfm version on a 6.7 litre well-tuned ford small block, and that was verging on being too large. On WOT the vacuum dropped to just under 1" wg, (minimum needed for a decent carb "signal"), I couldn't use WOT below 3000rpm or it bogged, no matter what I did jet-wise. Ran dam well after 3000rpm though, I have to admit, and was driveable lower down so long as you only opened up the first two barrels. Which, with a solid 490lbs ft and BHP to play with, was no hardship, lol.

I’d have thought the total of the input diameters of the “rams” would be greater than that of the 390 or maybe even the 500cfm of the Edelbrock - or am I off on completely the wrong track?

What have you got fitted to your car at present Mike, as it looks like you have tried various options?
