at the rate you're going Terry, I can't see that backstop being lifted by December 2020; maybe it needs a defined end date

Good point Steve, I did make a mental note when it was mentioned on the forum. Have you looked at yours lately to see if there is any sign of deterioration in the rubber?

I'll check them and report back.

Love the analogy, fortunately you don't need the entire forum to agree to your proposals before you can move on, and at least you have a backstop that works

Roger, not bad after 1 year, note i don't have the annoying "up turn" on the tab that's welded to the exhaust part. I slide it on then do up the v band clamp which is part of the custom exhaust i made, its never going to come off.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look Steve. They do still look good in the picture, the "proper ones" would have big cracks and splits in them after a year. I don't think the ozone in the sea air helps down here with rubber items, another problem with the sea air in addition to that fact that the salt in the air makes most metal go a brown colour very quickly

Mine too regularly break/disintegrate - but I think it's the heat that does it, especially in Summer when the temperature can get into the high 40's Centrigrade.
I too use a long handled screwdriver to get the new ones back on. Still no sign of my mechanic turning up, so nothing further tried on the Stag today.
Patience is a virtue.

Just a quick update in case any of you were wondering what is happening.
Waited in a week for the mechanic to come (he said he would), but he has never turned up, so a few days ago I decided I would try a couple of things I haven't so far tried.

However there is a nasty bug going round town and the misses and I have been confined to bed, and a couple of days ago she work me up in the night and asked me to take her to the A&E equivalent at the local Hospital here as her pain was so bad. Turns out as well as this bug she now also has kidney stones, and these were the cause of the excessive pain.
We both have an appointment with our Doctor this afternoon, to see what treatment we both need next.

When I am well enough the 1st thing I am going to try on the Stag is :-

• Take my "good" spare battery down to the car, place it on the ground near the Starter, and connect the positive via jump lead to the starter motor terminal (having already removed the cable from the car battery), and connect the negative to a good earth making the positive connection last and just for a short while. I have also already removed the earth isolator from the car battery. Therefore I am bypassing any "short" in the engine wiring, and if it still cranks slowly it more strongly points to a faulty starter/solenoid (although I know their is another possibility which I can address).

Depending on the result of the above test, I have yet to remove the plugs and turn the engine to see/feel if there is anything in the cylinders (oil/water) stopping the starter from turning it over properly. In case I do need a new Starter I have already emailed E.J.Wards about the availabilty of their advertised high torque Starter, but surprisingly they have not come back to me and it was about a week ago now. If I do have to change the Starter I am not looking forward to doing it myself one little bit because it is a bugger of a job, although I have done it once before in 2005 (which was when the current Starter was fitted), but I was younger then and had freeer access to the underneath of the car as it was then jacked up on ramps that are no longer available.

PS. I have already re-checked the Dizzy timing exactly as per the workshop manual with the aid of test bulb at 12 btdc and everything lines up exactly as it says it should.

It's time you had a change of luck its not been good since your return from Asia (enjoyed the tours you posted by the way), its a shame your not still at Glan Conwy would have loved to have had a look at the car with you, no one seems to bother with classics around here.

Doc says I don't need any anti-biotics as I am on the mend although still feel a bit rough. Tested my blood pressure, checked my breathing, and looked down my throat. Maureen was also checked out including her blood/oxygen level (which was O.K.) but has to go back Friday for a further check, but in the meantime keep taking the tablets they prescribed at the Hospital on Sunday. Doctor won't prescribe anything else until they are allowed to take their course. There does seem a lot of people in Los Cristianos suffering Gripe (as they call Flu) here at present, because most of our friends have it too, and are laid up in bed also, and it is usually tourists flying out from the U.K. with colds who are the cause.

Must say the Urgencias (A&E) at our local Hospital are very good. Arrived there at 5.15am Sunday, and at 5.20am Maureen was being seen by a Doctor, and a few minutes later was on a bed in a Treatment Room being given oxygen and on a drip which contained a strong pain killer as well as other things as they had quickly diagnosed kidney stones being the cause of the pain, and at 8.30am she was released with a prescription which we picked up at our local Farmacia on our way home (who always open Sundays), and at 9.30am she was home in bed having taken her first prescribed dose.

Unless suddenly take a turn for the worse, I am going to try the direct connection to the Starter tomorrow on the Stag to see what happens.

Hope we are both O.K. on the 18th of this month, because our Spanish Driving Licenses expire then, and we both have to take an (indoor) test that checks our reactions, eyesight, and asks questions about our health. If we both Pass that gives us another 5 years before having to go through the same thing again. I think it is a good idea though as it takes away the license of people who are no longer fit to drive. Keeping my fingers crossed that I am O.K. to keep driving the Stag when I eventually? get it going again.

If you take a look at Section 15, Page 129 of the Haynes Workshop Manual you will see what is involved in changing the Starter Motor, but if I recall the last time I did it, I got away without removing the Exhaust Pipe somehow. The cable colours on mine are slightly different to what it says in the book, as I had an Alarm installed when I first bought the car, which means another "interrupt" in the circuit, and what is shown as a WR wire from the ignition is in fact a green wire from the Alarm on mine.

The misses still pretty poorly and had to return to the Hospital this morning for further tests.
Prior to the Hospital visit the other local white Stag owner here (Ian Charlesworth) called round and after us trying to start my car, like me Ian thinks it is the Starter that has gone, so just ordered one from Wards, and can't do anything till it arrives in Tenerife, when I have arranged with a Garage I used to use quite a lot in the past to have the Stag recovered to them along with the new Starter.

Will get this same garage to also try and identify the source of the oil leaks, and attend to a few other matters on the car whilst they have it up on their ramps. I only stopped using them because there was another garage closer that had been recommended to me, but they seem quite happy to work on my car again, it also being the garage Ian Charlesworth uses as well.

Just a coincidence Terry, I happened to be in Wards office when you were on the phone to then just now. I am waiting while they finish fitting my refurbished front struts and oil pressure/temperature gauge. Hope the starter motor sorts your problem out.

If I had known, I could have asked them to give the Starter to you to bring out for me, and in return you could have had a week's stay in one of our Rental Apartments for free.!
