My Stag was once repaired by a french garage (before we bought it). We have a set of photographs from the process showing the engine being taken apart, the heads being skimmed and averything put together plus a hand written bill specifyig cost. One of the pictures show the heads being welded on the outside. I wonder if there is information about why the heads were welded? Can anyone help me read and translate? Also, is it known for the heads to crack on the outside where mine was welded?

the para under the word STAG refers to the head, but the photo is not clear enough to make out all of the words properly.
Best guess-
"work on 2 heads
skimming
pressurizing (ie pressure test)
aluminium welding (on 1)
grind valves
adjust valves"
rest of page is list of parts with cost totals
I assume the pressure test showed up a leak there
the writing on the photo of the head is "welding right hand head"
hope that helps, Dick

Thank you Dick!
I tried to type into Google translate, but at the same time I had to understand handwriting, I guess it is easier if you know the language.
It seems the head did leak there, I find that at bit of a surprise.Kirsti & Ian in Norway

Unless it was a flaw in the casting I would suspect frost damage as a likely cause for a crack in the water jacket in that location.
Given the Stags tendency to dump its coolant on a regular basis there is a good possibility the previous owner probably just kept topping it up with plain water, then Winter happened..........
I once bought a Rover V8 from the scrappies and found it had split along the entire length of the block at the bottom of the water jacket, fortunately they gave me my money back!
