Stag Carburretor Choices - Part 2

As the original Thread I started was getting a bit lengthy, I thought I would start a new one as a continuation.
My Stag is still off the road and on their request, I went round to the Garage who have it this morning to discuss progress.

If you remember I took it in there to fit a new Starter Motor, and sort out the oil leaks I was getting since fitting my Weber Carburretor.
At first they thought one oil leak was coming from the recently fitted oil cooler, but after having it pressure tested, that wasn't the case.
Oil was dropping onto the cooler from a bolt on the front of the engine and this has now been fixed, plus a missing nut on a sump bolt has also been replaced.

On test running the engine again at first it ran perfectly without any leaks, but then oil started appearing in the "Vee" once again.
The rocker cover gaskets are both dry, so that is not the source, so now they are going to remove the Inlet Manifold as it looks like it could well be the water pump gasket/seal. The Garage wanted my opinion and approval to do this before going ahead.

After having most of their staff off on holidays, they are now going to press on with the work on the Stag, and the Boss said he would ring me as soon as the Inlet Manifold is off to let me know what he finds and what parts are needed.

I've got just a few more weeks before I celebrate having owned the Stag for 25 years, so I hope to have it back and running by then!?

Terry look back at post 284 from your original thread. Reading your posts I would take my car away from that garage . If they cannot tell the difference between Atf (red) and Engine oil. Also there are no nuts on the sump pan. The front cover boots are blind holes. Very unlikely that the gaskets are leaking , I think the garage are taking you for a ride.

    Cheers Glenn

Your correct - my sump is attached by numerous nuts and bolts, and one bolt had dropped down and was resting on to the exhaust pipe, because the top nut had worked loose and dropped off..

I reckon the oil seal has blown out of the water pump, it did that on my Estate when I swapped from Strombergs to efi.

It must have been a loose fit, but the suction generated by the Strombergs kept it in place, but removing that suction allowed it to push up and spin on the pump shaft. That seal had probably done less than 5000 miles since it was fitted, but it could be that your seal is just old and tired.

I am thinking on similar lines. Can't remember exactly when I fitted a replacement water pump (without looking through my hundreds of Paddocks invoices), but it was well over 10 years ago.
Just waiting for a phone call from the Garage to say what they have found on removing the Inlet Manifold.

The Garage where the Stag now is did some good work on my Stag when I first Imported it 15 years ago, and successfully re-built the engine of the other white Stag here in Los Cristianos.
I don't think he is trying to "rip me off", and he hasn't asked for any money up front to fix my car. It is the same Garage that did a good job of "matriculating" my wife's Honda when we drove that over in 2005.

Just have to be patient and see what transpires. At least I am enjoying driving my wife's Honda Accord whilst the Stag is away.

I'm rebuilding a water pump and that seal in my case is a loose fit. I will order another seal.

                  Hi Terry,
I'm kinda doing the opposite by going back to Strombergs to see if oil leaks go away. It will be interesting. So far so good, but I haven't gone far yet. Still got an oil leak onto the RHS exhaust, but that is common. Now an inlet manifold gasket has let go (hope that is all ), so I need to fix that this weekend. Cheers

Tanya tried a Weber on her Stag but had a lot of oil leak problems (see her post in Part 1 of this Thread - post #220 towards the end).
Not ordering any new parts/seal until we find out what exactly has gone when the Inlet Manifold is off, as it might need a complete new water pump.
Pictured in DJT's parts link are the 2 long sump bolts, one of which had lost it's nut on my car as I could feel the bolt resting on the LH exhaust pipe.
Just checked back through my Stag parts invoices, and it was 2002 (17 years ago), that I fitted the current 6-vane water pump.

I thought that the alternator bolts would leak oil if removed. maybe I am confusing with rover v8

Have you been back to Stagweber yet Terry for advice?

Not sure exactly which front of engine bolt oil was leaking from, but it was removed and replaced which stopped one source of the oil leak, a 2nd source being the sump bolt that was missing it's top nut. The only current leak is in the "Vee" and which appears to be coming from the area by the water pump beneath the Inlet Manifold.
No - I have not been back to Chris Spain since fitting the Weber, I just want to get the car running again and not losing oil. Only did 2 runs in the car when the starter motor packed in, which was the start of the current problems, so - apart from that and the oil leaks the Weber has not yet been really tested.

Good to hear that they are getting to the bottom of it. Water pump sounds like a ballsache though

not tempted to sort the strommies and lob em back on then?

To answer your question - No, but that is what Tanya in Canada is currently doing to see if it cures her oil leaks.
