    MOT Grrrrr!

Last year, although exempt, I popped the car in for MOT... failed - MAJOR. Windscreen washers not working (because as it turns out the non return valve is missing). Last year, rather than faff about, I just popped a new external pump by the bottle and that was the MOT done.

Took it in this lunchtime for MOT... failed - MAJOR. Windscreen washers not working. This time because the new pump from last year had seized.

I think next year i'm just going to dangle a couple of tubes of pipe over the front of the windscreen, attached to a T piece and a funnel, lashed to the T bar and have a 2 litre bottle of water on the passenger seat!

(Oh and before anyone asks why I didn't check before I went? Yep that would have been the smart thing but then i'd have had to dry and polish the affected areas of course!) I don't think i've used the washers over the past year, it only goes out on sunny days and it's easier just to bug clean the screen as a spot job.)

Sounds exactly like my Stag usage. My washers only get used once a year (for the test) the rest of the time the bugs are removed using a spray and cloth. A Major fail does seem to be extreme especially when a slight leak from a steering pump or rack is deemed as an advisory.

We have probably done this to death, but my Stag was not submitted for the MOT. Instead my Stag specialist checked it over for over MOT issues, and advised all OK. I did likewise with the Alvis. In that case I watched the guys check it over from under in their inspection pit. I was even invited to risk an oil shower as the car does leak oil.

I found my washer pump was u/s too, when I did my pre-MOT checks.

My local test station gives a 'bill of health' rather than an MOT. So brakes, steering - all the safety issues are given a check over. Really nice to get a 'second pair of eyes' on the car and to know I'm safe. (well....the car, perhaps not my driving!) :-)

Just out of interest David how much do they charge for that and how does it stack up against the cost of an MOT? Do they issue any sort of paperwork?

Hi Richard. My local garage charges me £39.00.......but no paperwork.

Thanks for the reply David. I paid £10 more but of course got an MOT certificate to add to the previous ones dating back to the 1980's which I got when I bought the vehicle. For me it's really a matter of provenance because I won't have the car forever so it's all history to pass onto the next custodian when I get too old to get underneath or even get in and out of it!

A local garage here with old school mechanics does a "road worthiness" report for £25-00. I plan to get an mot when a few more miles on the clock as opposed to a date. John

And me, I don't see the point of not having someone double check whatever I have been working on, or, as this year, missed (perished ball joint cover, replaced within 2 days!)

I am lucky in that my local MOT test station belongs to a garage that specialises in classics.

I wondered why my MOT was taking rather a long time but it was because they had a work experience student in and they were explaining in detail and probably enjoying it on a much older car

Also, despite my thoughts that is running rich, not at all the case. Emissions were fine against the applicable test.

The other reason for going the MOT route, aside from having a second pair of eyes is that it also maintains the mileage record in a nice central place for the car app that I use for tracking "the fleet" here.

I know that maybe a weak excuse but if I'm going to pay to have someone check it over, it might as well deliver additional value to me.

My washer worked and the MoT was passed with no advisories. It's good to have an independent check as faults do creep up on you unnoticed.
