    Reset timing chain tensioner?

Is it possible to reset the timing chain tensioner without removing the front cover? The heads are off my engine and, although the camshaft wheels are properly secured in the brackets, the tensioner that I can see looks a little extended. Chains are JWIS fitted only 25,000 miles ago with new sprockets etc…

    In a word, No.

With the heads off and the cooling system drained there is not that much more work to access the tensioners and guides.

Also I would be interested to see the droop on JWIS chains after that mileage

Check the guides as well while you are in there. I found I had a recently fitted one that had failed after far fewer miles than that.. The rubber facing had not been vulcanised properly and the chain had worn through to the metal backing. Fortunately I heard it rattling and was able to replace it before any damage was done.

One problem I have regularly found on the straight chain guide on the RH bank is that the holes are not in the right place. The chain runs over the top end of guide rather than down its length and rapidly wears into the rubber resulting in the chain guide having to extend further than it would if the guide is modified to sit properly.

Since it looks like you need to remove the front cover anyway then it will be easy to see if this is the case.

Might be a good idea to look at the crank sprockets at the same time since they seem to be made of cheese!

Bloody Stag. This weather I should be driving it, not removing even more parts. I was looking forward to putting the heads back on tomorrow but now I’ll be taking the front cover off instead. Then waiting for new gaskets to arrive before putting it back together.

Neil - you don't have a sketch/photo of this mod to the guide by any chance?
