    Gearbox noises?

I am hoping that one of you incredibly intelligent, wonderful, experienced Stag maintainers can help me identify a NOISE! I have been identifying noises for 50 years (16 years with Stags) but this one has got me beat! My Stag is fitted with a 2500 TC straight 6 and matching O/D gearbox. TheNOISE sounds like gearbox layshaft bearings to meas it only occurs in the intermediate gears. In top gear, when the layshaft is not under load, the noise goes. However, in the lower gears if I turn the steering wheel very slightly left (car still going straight-ish ahead, so no centrifigal force to swish oil around in the gearbox) the noise goes! If I carry on turning left the noise doesn't come back, but if I turn it straight ahead or to the right, it comes back. I have drained the gearbox oil and there was no Xmas tree of mangled needle bearings on the magnetic plug as I have found in the past on other cars, in fact, no metallic stuff at all. I have driven the car with the power steering belt off, just in case it was power steering noise, but no difference. I have changed the front wheel bearings just in case - no difference. The above 2 items wouldn't explain why the NOISE goes away in top anyway. I had a minor fire in the Stag recently - I am beginning to wish that I had let it burn!!**^^## There is nothing worse than an unidentified NOISE! Hoping for a response from one of you geniuses!

    Regards, Lyall

PS I have had the usual advice to turn up the radio or drill a hole in the silencer!
