Decided to find the source of the leak on my stag engined estate.
I rebuilt this pump about 12 years ago and it has done 50 or 60 thousand miles since, but I was surprised at how fast the leak developed
On stripping the pump it turned out that large rust flakes had fallen off the impeller between the seal and the shaft and that these had cut through the thin rubber bellows part of the seal that allows for thevertical movement of the impeller seal
Fortunately the gear teeth are perfect on pump and jackshaft (unlike my other recent experience). IIRC this pump came off a TR7 with 82000 on the clock so it must have done over 130000 miles now. The back of the impeller needed about 20 thou off it to clean it up so now all I need is a rebuild kit
