    Clutch ID

    Hi team,

Currently changing the gearbox on my Stag and the clutch is a bit of a mystery. I have a Ford Essex V6 mated to a Triumph Stag 4 speed manual with A-Type overdrive.

I don't want to put the old clutch back in, but also haven't got a clue what the old one is and where to buy a replacement.

I could get the plate re-lined and the cover reconditioned, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of such a crossover?

The markings on the clutch plate say AP approved, L15L25 and 50052.

    Thanks!

    Chix

Will it not be a clutch for the 1970's Ford Capri/Granada/Transit with the Essex 3-litre engine?

Silly boy. Forgot about the splines.

Just had a quick look through my 1987 AP-Borg&Beck data book. No reference to 50052 or L15L25.

It seems virtually ALL Fords with a V6 from that era 70's/80's had a 9 1/2" (241mm) clutch and they all had the same cover plate old Borg&Beck number HE2861. HOWEVER there are numerous driven plates listed for Fords with the V6, and they are all 23 splines so are no good. The Stag driven plate is listed as HB1367, BUT this is a 9" plate with 10 splines and the Stag was 9 1/2" originally, so not sure what is going on there.

I suspect you need a HE2861 pressure/cover plate to fit the Ford flywheel/engine (unless it has been modified) and then use the standard Stag driven/friction plate. You will also need to check the Stag release bearing is the right face profile to operate the Ford cover plate.

The above is only my guess work as I have no direct experience of either a Ford V engine or a manual Stag! but I hope it helps a little.
Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Thank you SO much for taking the time to respond! Really appreciate your expertise!

I've decided to get my existing parts re-conditioned rather than try and source new units, as it's just too complicated!
I'll let you know how it goes...

        Many thanks

Stag is a 9" driven plate now (9.5" no longer available), cover looks to be Ford but looks like it has been used with original stag profile release bearing, which is wrong.

Curved diaphragm should use a flat bearing, flat diaphragm should use a curved bearing as per original stag fitment.

(Just looked up 9.5" x 10 spline, seems to be still available from some places).

There is a flat release bearing on Rimmers, do you think that's what it needs?

I mean, it's been working fine with that configuration the 4 years I've had it, so I'm reluctant to change the set up!

              That's up to you.
Who makes that bearing that Rimmers sell ???, what brand is it ???.

Chix , you cannot successfully use flat on flat or round on round wrt to release bearing to cover profile.

the photo of the centre plate appears not bedded in (unworn areas) was there a clutch operation issue beforehand?
There are 2 secrets to staying on top :- 1. Don't give everything away.
                2.

No clutch issues at all, works fine!

The only problem is grinding when going into 3rd gear (both from 2nd and from 4th) which I really can't see as a clutch issue, more a gearbox issue.
I think I'll keep the same set up, just to be safe.

This is the release bearing that was already in there:

Just came off the phone to precision clutch who have just re-conditioned my clutch plate and cover, and they said if it's been working with a round bearing, just keep it the same.

Just out of interest, does anyone actually know the consequences of using a round bearing on rounded clutch cover profile?
