I've bought new backing boards to renovate my door cards. They have one smooth face and one rough. Which face gets covered by the leathercloth and which face goes against the interior of the door?

If it’s millboard then iirc smooth to the car side, rough to the door. Can dig one out and double check if nobody else confirms (it’s cold outside
)

Agreed, I've seen several pairs of original door cards + re-manufactured ones as Paul describes

The rougher side promotes the glue adhering to the surface. Might be a good idea to cover the outside with plastic/polythene helps to stop it going mouldy.
