Notes for the Weber 38DGMS (twin-choke) carb conversions: Useful if you have bought one,are thinking of buying one, or just interested anyway 
I have just done some measurements on various air filters of the height above the carb in relation to clearance ofthe under-bonnet bar and pad. The aim is to help in selection of the most suitable air filter for the user. All engine heights vary, and it is not possible to be definitive about any particular car.
Mr Gasket 14x3 'Performance'air filter: this filter is not as low as the Lowrider at the centre, but because it slopes down from the centre, this helps on most cars toclear the bonnet pad and barwhere needed (at the front of the filter); should fit under the bar in most cases. The large 3-inch filter element should also allow excellent breathing.
Lowrider (14x2): this is the lowest profile air cleaner, however, the top plate isvery close to the top of the carb. A 1/2 inch spacer of some kindis needed under the air filter to ensure it fits correctly on top of theretaining strap supplied with the kit; these can be purchased from various suppliers (eg Real Steel). This filter can normally be fitted to clear the bonnetbar and pad but if used with a spacer, may require relocation (or removal)of the bar.
10in air filter (WA2165BOX): This neat little 10 inch filter allows good access around the carburettor. Unlike the 14 inch filters which have a dropped base, the filter base is flat, so it is not a low profile filter.As a consequence, use of this filter probably requires relocation or removal of the bonnet bar, and the wing nut may touch the bonnet pad depending on your engine height andwhich wing nut is used.
Other filters: Most American air filters with the standard5 1/8 inch circular base should fit, andclear the bonnet if the height is less than 63mm (without wing nut)and slope downwards at the edge.
