Alternative bulkhead (engine bay) sound proof solution?
Good description of the original product that was used, which was probably was the best product available at the time though.
Some crazy prices to rebuy as you mention.
Aside of having the original look and the issues discussed previously about its fire rating, it's heavy. That was enough for me to just buy the modern incredibly lightweight stuff. Looks a bit space age but I used it in the cockpit, under the tranny tunnel and even under the carpets. Can buy it by the meter and easy to find in most speed shops or rubber suppliers. Probably Asian made but its an excellent product. I even put a flame to it! Held up well. I think its listed as firewall insulation. Comes with or without adhesive.20150212_135723.jpg
I actually had fitted a new replacement bulkhead pad when the scare came out about them being flammable. I wrote to James Paddock about this and I am still waiting on a reply. I removed it and replaced it with Dynamat sound deadening and then a layer of silver finished fireproofing material which I bought from Car Builder Solutions. Purists won't like it but the original material is simply sponge foam bonded to a plastic sheet. I have Dynamat on both sides of the bulkhead.
The Dynamat looks good and its a safe option!
The old stuff's got a bit of a rubbery feel to the outer surface and I couldn't get it to ignite when I tried on a small sample. Seemed to melt away more than anything. But the newer replacements are best avoided since no firm data is available, as far as I recall.
I remember the time when the scare was happening..
I'm always conscious about modifying anything on my car, but when it comes to safety that rationale's out the window. I'm also extremely conscious of weight in the car. I love the Dynamat performance and considered it but it was just too heavy for me. The original's very heavy as well. This firewall product I used you can lift with your pinkie. Light as a feather.
