I collected my car tonight from a Stag specialist where it has had a huge amount of work done. It has had very poor running all year and to resolve that problem it has been fitted with a recon distributor with new cap, rotor arm and coil. Carbs were balanced and she was running like a dream when I picked her up. However after about 5 miles she died as I approached a roundabout and was very reluctant to start. I got her going again and all the way home everytime I pressed the clutch the rev counter dropped to 0 and the engined died. No stuttering not stalling just instant dead. Almost as if the ignition had been switched off. However at each junction I managed to keep her going and got her to my drive but as I had to stop to select reverse she died again and would not start, eventually the battery started to fail so I stopped trying. I let her cool down and went out an hour later and she started instantly and was running perfectly again. I went out for a drive and again after about 5 miles the same problem and I only just got back. Obviously I can take her back to the garage but getting her there is a problem. I'm hoping this is a simple fix because there is pretty much nothing left to change on this car she has had everything, including all of my sense of humour!

first port if call is fuel filter ,check for flow
and then fuel cut off switch ,clean the contacts inside

Yes you seem to have been on the money with that one. I had replaced the pump with a modern electronic pump and the filter with a filter king. I removed both and replaced them with original equipment and it is runs much better. However she is very reluctant to go over 4,000 revs and almost slows down if I push her.
