    Head Gaskets

    This week i`m replacing my head gaskets and renewing my timing chains, i have started to strip the engine down today no problems so far, but then iv`e not got the heads off yet :shock:apart from the odd scratch and puncture in my hands is been a good day..

    I`m now committed :shock::shock:

      Well done Adrian, Go for it mate, before long you will have an all sorted Stag. Engine looks good doubt if you will have that many probs. Get Martin to help

                      Cheers Stuart, i like the idea buti have blown a big part of the budget on some tubularexhaust manifolds, i also would like the alternator relocation mod, plus a bit more chrome is on the agenda, and if i can a aluminium rad..:shock:

                          Thats the problem with Stags too many mods available and most of them reasonably priced making them very tempting

                          Personally I would have gone for the WP before the manifolds.

                            Ok it`s got me beat i have just spent nearly 4 hours trying to get the LH head off but it`s not going anywhere.:Xiv`e tryed the jack method and gently tapping but to no provail, i think that the top row of studs have corroded up..

                            Any suggestions would be most appriciated.

                              It looks like you still have all the studs in place - you really need to get these out.

                              When i did mine recently i was able to use two nuts tightened together to form a locknutand remove 4 of the 5 studs. They were very difficult and it was slow progress, but they did come out eventually. Sdeady pressure is best - you don't really want to break the studs

                              Others have been able to get three nuts on the thread to form a stronger lock nut, but i wasn't able to get enough room to get the spanner head on them.

                              The one nearest the bulhead would not budge - i had to remove the camshaft and resort to the rope-trick to push the head up on the stud - this broke the stud to head bonding and enabled me to remove it with the locknut.

                              It was not a 5 minute job........ for pictures, check out the 'timing chain season' thread.

                              I'm sure others will have their own thoughts, but that was what worked for me.
