    Intermittent cutting out

My 74 Mk2 fitted with lumenition electronic ignition has developed a fault which can happen at any time. Driving along the engine cuts out, the rev counter zeros, sometimes it will restart whilst still in gear but other times I have to wait 2 - 5 minutes before it will fire up again. This fault can happen again within minutes or not until the next journey. Thought at first it was fuel related but the rev counter behaviour says electrics. Checked all connections, fitted new coil, 4miles later cut out. Fitted a used ignition module and managed 6 miles before cutting out. Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

Bit of a stab in the dark, but I would suggest checking out the inertia switch contacts

    (grey cylinder behind wiper motor)

carefully prise outer case off to expose and clean contacts.

I do have a few reasons to suggest this as a possibility, one of the biggest is that its given me similar symptoms as yours, but it was the very last thing I tried after all of usual and more expensive things!

PS is your new coil a ballasted (6v)... it should be.... the loom was resisted on Mk2 stags

Sue, on my last stag I had a similar problem,it turned out to be the fuel pump.

If the revcounter is zeroed while the engine is still in gear and you have a manual, then it is a failure of the ignition primary- it's possible that the ignition power module (not the optical bit inside the distributor) is getting too hot if you have placed it on the bulkhead where most people put it - some people now put the power module inside the car to keep the module a bit cooler.....

hi i had the same problem for six months before i was told that my electronic ignition was at faultduring a tune up, but the unit was 23years old and i agee with kryten your problem is most probably the module. I too have installed mine inside the car on the relay tray, maybe thats why it lasted so long.

Thanks for all the suggestions, checked inertia switch, checked fuel pump, tried another 6v coil and ignition module all without improvement. Eventually found that the coil was being supplied 10 - 11 volts from the ballast resistor wire!! (and cooking!!). Stripped out ballast wire, replaced with standard wire and 12v coil and now running a treat.

            Regards
