    .Rear wheel arch/wing repair.

    HELP!!!

I am pulling my hair out trying to match up a rear arch repair panel (NOT SOCTFL) and rear wing repair panel prior to welding. Only taken 5 months to get where I am now.

If I put the inner arch panel to the sill, the curv of the arch doesn't marry up well with the wing arch but if the arch marry's up well, then the inner arch isn't touching the top of the sill, which I think it should.

Should I scrap both panels and start again with SOCTFL? They weren't in stock when I bought these from a recommended supplier who said "I would be pleased with the fit". The only fit is me having one!

Is there anybody willing and capable of travelling to Sonning Common, near Reading who has done this job and can undertake this work for me? Proper rates paid for a good job.

Not sure if this should be posted on the wanted forum, sorry in advance.

    Jeff.

      Hi Dave,

      Thanks for your response.

I can make several cuts as recommended in the book. The problem is with the inner arch which fits well against the old arch with the bottom edge touching the top of the sill but it doesn't sit well in the outer wing.

If I move the inner arch round by 1", then it sits well in the outer wing but not very good in the old arch on the car.

Hope that makes sense, but I will post pics later to explain better.

      Jeff.

Not sure exactly what panel you exactly mean, but I am doing the rear 3/4 panels (see my thread White/Blue Bavarian Stag)

I'm getting to the stage where I could write a book on rear wheel arch/wing repair!!

I ditched the first repair panels I had as they were an awful fit. They were red oxide primered and came with a Rimmer's Label on them although I actually bought them from WINSInternational.

I then got mine from E.J. Wards. They are not SOCTFL as such (are there SOCTFL 3/4 Panels?) but as far as I can see, they have been made by the same company doing the SOCTFL door skins.

They are a much better fit around the wheel arch and actually stayed in place without clamps! They also have much sharper definition on the cosmetic swage around the top of the wheel arch. One panel (LH) however had no curvature on the B Post flange and I had to hammer that out straight and redo the flange.

As mentioned in the EJ Ward bodywork DVD it is very difficult to avoid the welded flange between old and new wing "tucking in" with the heat. I placed one single weld spot about every 5 minutes and well away from each other but still got some deformation which I will lead-fill.

Hope this helps - fraid it's not practical to pop over from Germany!

          Thanks for replying Dasadrew,

The panel I am talking about along with the 3/4 rear wing is the inner arch repair panel, which SOCTFL make but were out of stock.

This picture shows the 3/4 wing repair panel fitting quite well apart from it being a bit too long at the rear of the arch.

          More pictures to follow.

          Jeff.

And this shows the rear end a bit too long.

This pic shows everything exposed and cutaway for the inner arch prior to adjusting and fitting.

Forgot to mention I have followed your thread with great interest and admiration knowing I was going to tackle the same.

This shows the inner arch offered up and sits quite well.

This shows the front leading edge of the arch sitting on top of the sill.

This is the inside of the new wing and the inner arch sitting neatly inside. This is where the problem is, the front edge of the inner sill is about 1" off the top of the sill as seen on the left because we are looking from the inside.

But if I move the inner arch round 1" to where it should sit and clamp it as in this picture.

                            Nearly there!

However, with the great help of Cleco clamps, (with thanks to Brian Gresley) The inner arch does 'conform' and give with this result, which I discovered today after receiving clamps from fleabay.

But it does highlight a problem further round, which is also where the new wing is a bit too long.
