    Electronic ignition.

    Hi

My Stag is still on points at present and I want to covert to electronic ignition. Can anyone reccomend a good make? I have Newtronic on my PI- is this best for the Stag? Had a lovely run out in her yesterday but had to spend a while this morning washing the salt off!

I've been very impressed with the PerTronix Ignitor - identical product known as 'Aldon' in the UK. Extremely quick & easy to fit. If you want a bargain, take advantage of the cheaper prices and weakness of $ andbuy via a US supplier (but shipped from UK warehouse) you'll get it a almost half the price of UK suppliers http://www.vintageperformance.com/re...kets/lucas.htm - you need the LU-187 and you don't need to change your coil.

      Hi Brian,

Most people seem to opt for the Luminition, I have this on mine which was installed by the previous owner (or manber the one before - who knows !)

If i were looking to fit one myself it take a look at the Pertronix/Aldon ignitor (which fits completely inside the distrubuter cap) or the Luminition . The Pertronix can be found quite a bit cheaper (i have purchased from RetroRockets in the past) than the Luminition but is a less advanced system.

      cheers..... Andy

        Hi

Many thanks for the advice and website link. I can't believe the price difference...! I'll get an Ignitor ordered and give it a go. I never did like the box of electronics stuck to the bulkhead and this seems a much better product for a standard car. Thanks again

        Regards

Hi all. This and other threads on the forum have convinced me to convert (someone told me 99% of Stags were now electronic)
And I was just about to go for PerTronix/Aldon when this one popped up on ebay!

            at £45!!
Britpart don't actually list an application for the Stag, but this seller is listing the same one as for LandRover V8.

            Has anyone fitted it
Does anyone have experience of using it?

            Cheers
            Chris

Personally I'd be a bit wary, it's a third of the price of reputable systems and there doesn't appear to be any backup. Don't want to be a wet blanket, but . . . . Martin.

I just bought something very similar from ebay but at half that price. It was listed for a rover V8 but for the same lucas distributor as the stag. It didn't fit. It might have fitted a MK 1 single points dizzy but not the mk 2. I modified the plate by drilling holes an managed to get it working. Starting is improved but I can't yet comment on reliability

                  Hello,

on my TR6 I have installed a Tex Magna-Spark electronic ignition. It is a bit more expensive, but consists mostly of parts made by Bosch for mass production cars. Other advantages are given here:

                  Kind regards,

                  Dieter.

Another member has asked me how i fitted this unit. £29 off ebay, intended for a rover v8.

I had to break off a spindly locating peg from the baseplate of the pickup module and then drill a single hole alongside the pickup so it would locate with the bottom contact breaker clamp screw. Also I has to grind a small section on the bottom odge of the plate so that the plate didnt foul the lug that hold down the moveable part of the dizzy base plate.

I have attached a picture below, viewed from standing by the nearside wing of the car.

It's a bit of a bodge but it works and is the cheapest you will get and it works, reliability I can't comment on yet.

There is some doubt about whether it will last using the 1.5 ohm ballasted coil and also whether the spark will be weak. I am going to try it with a 12v 3ohm unballasted coil and a new 12v unballasted ignition feed wire to see if the spark is better.

Also note i drilled my hole a bit too close to the bolt that holds the module to its base plate, the had to relieve the area with a dremel to get the bolt in, you won't make that mistake now I have told you!

My Newtronic system came from Paddocks about 13 years ago, and is still going strong. Have once had to change the disk in the dizzy but you get spares when you 1st buy.

I purchased a kit from ebay, but it does not fit. The backplate is shown with the kit .

This is a picture of the kit plus the back plate.

This is how I think it should fit. It fouls the slot for the key that allows it to move with the vacuum advance. I think I should attach the red bit directly to the base plate. Not certain though of the exact position to fix it.

                              Any ideas?
