    Happy...sort of

Today I managed to drain the coolant So what you say, well for me it's a bloomin' miracle - coolant all over the garage floor - but I don't care I'm chuffed to bits.

Next job - remove the inlet manifold - now I'm slightly grumpy - I managed to get all except one bolt out and this one ain't budging, plus the head of the bolt is starting to disintegrate - I've tried the hot and cold bit, but that didn't work, the old WD40 stuff, no good - will I have to resort to cutting the top of the bolt off to get the manifold out and then mole grips on the shaft? Any advice? please?

    Cheers, Mark

Try soaking it in "easing oil" and leaving it overnight, then have another go in the morning.

Mole grips will be no good if the head of the bolt won't shift it, you will end up drilling the middle and using astud extractor, or cutting a slot for a flat blade screw driver.

I would use some plasticine or blue-tack to make a well around the bolt, then leave overnight with plus-gas...better than WD40.

Ok I'll try that first - off to the nearest motor factors first thing tomorrow then! Cheers

          Well done.

I've mentioned this several times before, but for anyone who didn't read it: If you need to drain the coolant, remove the radiator filling plug and push a length of hose down inside the radiator. Bias it so that it rubs down the side tank to avoid catching it on the ends of the cooling tubes. When it reaches the bottom, syphon the coolant into a bucket. That way you don't get wet when you undo the bottom hose, don't have to lie in spilt coolant and it is all recovered for proper disposal or re-use.

This tip was passed to me several years ago by Peter Howells and I have used it successfully many tiimes since.

            Hi Mark
Keep soaking it untill it can be moved, even if it means days.I made the dreaded mistake on a previous stag of being too eager when one of my bolts on the I/M refused to budge,I stuck a drill into the middle of the bolt,it was one of the long ones, all seemed to be going well when suddenly the drill bit was going in too easily,I had gone off course into a waterway on the head.
