    Spin-on oil filter

I've got one of these ready to fit when I finally get everything back together, but what does everyone think? A good idea? Bad idea? or no real difference?

P.S Subtitle should read who's got one? not whose!

Works OK - a lot less mess that the original to change, and you don't have to dig that bl**dy seal out..... makes me more inclined to change the oil regularily

Appreciate the gratuitous engine bay pic Kevin.......

I've got the spin-on type, but it's always been there so don't know any difference - dead easy to change though with minimal hot oil running down my arm! Do I recall something about the spin-on types incorporating a non-retun valve which stops oil from the crank bearings draining back into the sump when the cars been left standing for a while?

I fitted one about 5 year's ago and never looked back since, as the lad's say beats getting your arm covered in oil.

Got the engine sorted then have you, have you fully torqued it all down yet ??

Thanks guys! I'll fit the new filter with confidence now

heads are torqued down, but my wrench only goes up to 50ftlbs, Haynes says 55.

Still got to connect a few more bits yet, but should be able to fire it up over the weekend, don't think I'll chance a long journey for a while:?

Word of warning when you fit a spin on conversion. I fitted one and, as the rest of you say, it is much easier to change. However a replacement filter I ordered along with other items from one of the best known suppliers only screwed on by less then one turn. I didn't like the idea of the filter falling off and dumping the oil on the road. Rang them up and they said "new type, but should be OK" however they sent FOC one of their old stock and this took 4 or 5 turns to tighten up.

Because all screw on filters look the same there is a tendency to think they are all the same but you need to get one with a one way valve and a good thread engagement. - Alan

It's a Halfords one but I hasten to add its very old although hardly used, it was given to me by my father-in-law. I guess after all I've spent so far I ought to invest in a better one now.:?

                    Hi Kev

Get one these they are ace I have had one for at least 10 years or more and it is still like new despite being used on a regular basis for wheel changes, diff changes etc.

Every nut & bolt has a torque figure so it gets used a lot on my car.

Not sure, but I'd confidently buy from either LD Parts or Paddocks even thought they each sell a different version!

I bought mine over a year ago from Rimmers (just never got round to fitting it)

Does that mean that I won't be able to use filters from other suppliers on Rimmers adapter?

I'd expect all of them to have a common fitting. Peter Howells is very open on his website that LD supplies a non-standard filter but he's personally used it for thousands of miles and recommends it. It has a shorter body than standard so is easier to remove (in his opinion) and quicker to prime after oil change. Personally I reckon the longer body ones are easier to get hold of to remove. I've used several oil filters from Paddocks without problem - Rimmers is usually my supplier of last resort.

I've been using Paddocks lately rather than Rimmers, mainly for the reasons expressed elsewhere on this forum.

The plus point for Rimmers is that they tend to stock just about every part that is available, and so far I've had no problem with the items that I've purchased, but if its cheaper/ better from someone else..........

                              Kevin,

I have had one for about 10 years. Another couple of words of caution:

There have been stories of some being supplied with the wrong o-ring and this partially shutting off the oil supply. I think this is a thing of the past and should be OK if you buy from a reputable supplier.

The adaptor uses the same type of seal between it and the block as the standard oil filter canister. These will harden in time and have to be changed. I tend to change it every 2 or 3 years.

Peterat LDpart supplies Unipart GFE173 filters at £2-83. I bought half-a-dozen from him a while ago and they are fine. Cheap-as-chips.
