Is that a K and N sticker you got next to your Stromberg Air Filter Alan?.

Interesting... I found mine was noticably more responsive with the K&N. Not a lot but enough to make it worthwhile.

I've often thought about those, but at £60 odd are they worth it ? Martin.

Hi Russ, what's that in front of your washer bottle ? and the small round white object on the front of the suspension tower ? Martin.

Not worth the money. You will never notice the power increase as it is so minor it's negligible.
If you opt for KN filter, you may as well use your old panty hose or stockings. Trust me, your hose will do a better job than KN junk.

                  1. No cost to you.
                  2. Less restriction than KN filter, but just as good as KN to let all particles into your engine
                  3. You don't need to wash the filter. I am sure you have plenty supply of stockings.

All jokings aside. KN filters are for race cars and not for consumer cars. If they are so good, why there is not a single car manufacture uses KN filters on their production cars.

Even though you don't have to replace it with another filter, it uses the ancient technology of cleaning the filter and then re-lubing it with a special kind of oil.
K&N filters allow more air and also more dirt through-so they are not "better" than stock from that perspective.

                  imho

                    its a stromberg alarm system
if they get removed and the owner tries to replace with webers

Alarm siren, and the white thing is the sounder for the dual zone microwave detector - not an inferior Carb conversion

Well I've found it quite noticable, especially on WOT, but then again my heads are polished and ported so you could argue that it isn't stock so flows better.

Because they would not be able to sell replacement filters at great cost to be replaced every (however many) miles. In the same way Epson et al don't sell a refillable ink cartridge for their printers and give dire warnings to folks that use them.

Wellagreed, but paper filters are more restrictive than K&N because they have a finer mesh. Obviously this is good as it lets fewer fine particles through but if you want to increase the air flow without increasing the size of the filter you have to decrease the size of the mesh. The oil coating is supposed to trap the smaller particles that would otherwise get through. It's a compromise. Better than just having wide open trumpets into the carbs

                          imho

                          alan
It's also worth pointing out that K&N is (purely in terms of cost) worthwhile in the long term once you've bought 4 or 5 paper filters it has paid for itself. The bottles of oil for replenishing arent very expensive.

                          All IMHO of course!
When I finally get the thing through its MOT I'll put it on the rollers and see what I'm getting. 157 to beat I believe...

That is 60,000 miles, by which time the additional crap that gets through the K&N filter will have wrecked the engine.

Not for me. Stick with the original.

I'm confused by this argument. What is the maximum size of particle that can get through a filter that will damage the engine? Obviously a paper filter won't remove everything and neither will any other kind, so what I'm getting from this debate is that somewhere between the size of particles that a paper filter will let through, and the size that a fabric filter will let through, there is going to be a size which does irreversible damage to the inside of the engine!

I've thought a lot about this and not sure I buy it - when you de-coke a head it is covered in deposits which are obviously formed during normal running. These are very abrasive in themselves and will damage the engine in the long term, so I'm not sure that a non-paper filter will contribute any more to normal wear and tear...
