    Wear on splines

How can you tell which part of the splines to replace? I would have thought the outer female part would take more wear. I have too much movement and not sure which way to go. I have two sparehalf shafts one early one late. The late one has the surface on the splines machined like a ladder. I assume this means not much wear. However when I measure it against the early one it is 0.9mm thinner across the diameter. Confused. Mike

    Hi Mike

Take them to Martin at proptech and he will check them for you and balance or make you new ones!

Take the hub and complete halfshaft for him to check.

Mike. Where abouts do you live? I have fitted brand new drive shaft so I have my old ones spare. They are pretty good, could do with a clean and a lick of paint, yours for a small fee!!

Mike, whatproblems do you have(other than play)? Just curious as I have vibration around 70, not wheelso probably driveline. The strange thing is its intermittent so did wonder if it was due to the position of splines after cornering etc.

Ive been chasing vibration problems on my car for years and Ive now replaced everything except the diff. Last job was to replace the propshaft and Ive fitted a CV jointed one from Rimmers. First impressions seemed very good, some/most of clonking eliminated and take up seemed smoother etc. Anyway took the car for a spin yesterday and it was an absolute s**t heap to drive, lots of vibration when decelerating from any speed and seemed low on power. Doh then I remembered, when I refitted the exhaust after fitting the propshaft, on the final check over I decided to adjust the handbrake as it seemed a bit weak. Just tweaked the adjusters up a few turns and thought no more of it. Guess what, the handbrake was partially on resulting in hot drums and the vibration and lack lustre performance. Loosened off the handbrake on the adjusters and vibration seems to have gone and performance is back to normal although longer test run is now required before Im totally satisfied. Anyway feel like a right pilchard for just tightening up the adjusters without checking that the wheels spin freely afterwards but hopefully the problem is sorted.

Hi Dave, so you reckon the prop was causing most of your vibration problem? I was thinking of buying yet another then getting it balanced - how would this compare wth cost of yours?

I find the problem with the ajuto and handbrake is I rarely use the latter except when parked - sometimes driven off thinking its a bit slow only to find its still on...

Is there a rubber plug on the diff end of the drive shaft? Haynes imply there is.

                Hi Mike

Not that I am aware of:?

There is rubber in the prop of an auto model do you mean this?

Yes sorry should have said it's auto. Does this rot or is it quite stable. Mike

Paul CV jointed prop £100 from Rimmers not sure how that compares with having one balanced and fitting new ujs.

Hi Dave, I was quoted £100 for a replacement prop for my ZF, so thats not unreasonable. I'll have a look.

                      Cheers
