Rain spots on paint

This is not on the Stag but still relevant I would think. My fathers A35 was resprayed about 2 years ago. It was sprayed in 2 pack or one of these modern water based paints, not cellulose.

All of a sudden it has started developing the White rain spots that i am sure some of you are familiar with. Shower of rain and then the sun shines and bleaches the paint where the bubbles have been. You T cut them away and next shower of rain and bit of sun and they are back again.

I have had this in the past but I thought it was a problem with cellulose and that you do not get it with the more durable modern paint types? I am afraid that I think the only cure is another respray:shock:.

Any help/advice on why this suddenly starts after a couple of years ( it has been well polished but has to live outside) and paint types etc would be much appreciated as resprays are not cheap Obviously themore you polish it the worse it gets!

i had this problem on my stag, polished it , t-cut, goes for a bit then back it comes,i could never get rid of it, only cure i found was to respray

What colour is it? Not red by any chance?

Hi Jeff - no it is blue, I always had it on red cellulose that is why I am surprised he has got the problem:?

It does tend to show more on deep pigmented colours, red being the worse, next to black of course.

I would suggest a good cut back then a descent wax or polish, even applying 2 to 3 coats in between drying and buffing.

These modern acrylic paints aren't all they are cracked up to be, regardless of what others will say. The red fades terrible.

I use Farecla products and have good results, others use Mer polish and are happy, just try different ones. I have been given a good one used in the trade, but can't remember its name, I'll look later and let you know.

After you have removed them again, what about applying a coat of sealer, the stuff they use in the detailing world. If you look for the thread on Rush's car that Christian detailed I think he list's what he used on it.

I get exactly this on my Stag, which was resprayed in two pack in 1988. I have not found a cure yet, but someone told me that they thought it was a result of having too much wax on the car. I thought it was only a problem with cellulose too...:X

Possibly silicone or silicone based polish under the paint? A friend of mine used Mer to polish his car & when it needed a small repair he had to bare metal the panel to stop the bleeding through. Silicone is a sprayers nightmare and Mer is full of silicone:shock:

Hiya Giles, as it's two pack, I would have thought re-spraying the clear lacquer would solve it, the original may have been very thin. Peugeot / Renault had massive problems with water based 2 pack, water spots, tree sap and bird lime in particular so you're not alone. Martin.
