Inertia fuel Cut out switch alternative

Is their an alternative fuel cut out switch avalible for the Stag?, after I broke down after the National day, I have changing the coil, cap, condensor and Leads, then she cut out on me in Wembley on monday, then I noticed the pump was not flowing and the fuel filter was empty, so I brought a Quentin Hazel Electronic Fuel pump (£48 from www.cbccarspares.co.uk a MG parts supplier as apposed to £80 from a Stag supplier!) she cut out on me again at traffic lights today!:X , I by passed the Inertia switch at the side of the road and hey presto, the filter was full of liquid tax again and she fired back up again.

Is their another suitable switch that could be fitted as Rimmers show that new ones are not avalibe anymore and I am not prepared to slap on a second hand one from ebay.

I'm sure i read somewhere that a generic one off a Peugeot will do the job........ can't find a link to it though....... try it for a few quid with an Ebay special ?

      Hi Tee Cee

I am not aware of any suitable replacement switch, however I do know that it is possible to strip down, clean and reassemble the switch with very satisfactory results. The internal construction of the switch is very simple and robust and falliure of it is only due to accumulation of dirt and mild corrosion after thirty odd years of use. Good luck with it.

Hiya, if you search this subject, I posted a drawing of the internals of the switch, simple and easy to fix, basically it just needs cleaning.
Whatever you do, do not run the car with it bypassed, the potential for fire is too great. Martin.

Just read it Martin, sounds simple enough so I try to dismantle it tomorrow. Cheers

                Hi Tee Cee,

I posted in April about a very satisfactory alternative, here's the link. http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/vi...inertia+switch

                Very easy to fit.

                Cheers,

The inertial cut out switch is a simple affair and as already stated needs the occasional clean of the internal contacts. It is a bit of a fiddle to strip down but basically there are two self tapped screws in the side of the body that should be removed first. Then you have to carefully prise off the bottom, don't stab yourself in the process, where the two spade contacts are fitted in the base. Draw out the base and the internals consist of long two copper terminals that engage in the top of the body with the trip plunger. A steel ball sits in a plastic cone on top of a small magnet that holds it in place. I the event of an accident the ball jumps up and hits the plunger thus disconnecting the circuit
Clean all the internals and the copper terminals that engage with top plunger which has a copper ring on it to complete the circuit.
                  Reassemble dry

Its that darned verdigris that spoils the electrical flow! A good clean and a polish and all should be good again. There was some talk on here a while ago about polishing the ball that does the jumping and the knocking open of the contacts; unnecessary in my humble opinion as long as it is clean and not rusted to its magnetic seat it will do its job.

If the switch is found to be missing but the wires are not connected just dangling loose in the car will this cause the car to run badly?

Unless someone has been playing silly buggers with the fuel pump wiring, it shouldn't run at all!

I bought a project TR6 during the summer which was last on the road in 2012 and found the inertia fuel switch missing ! Who in their right mind would remove such a thing !
Goes without saying it will be replaced,

It's running - ish ie fuel pump runs but issues once warmed up think it's the temperature compensators or at least something on the carb but I did notice the fuel inertia wires just dangling loose in the engine bay. I guess if I did connect a switch, it still wouldn't work as its bypassed cos the pump is running, is that right?

yes. the inertia switch connects power to the fuel pump and is therefore the only power supply... or should be.
