    Black rear panel

    I know this was a feature in the early mk 2 cars (also on TR6's and Dollies i think) and I always quite liked it - it was a matt paint wasn't it?

    Anyone know the actual dates it was the standard?

    Related to that I was reading something somewhere recently that the changeover dates were a bit blurred between the "mk's" and that the last Stags were a mk 3 - the latter one being complete news to me.

    It's true isn't it that the earliest mk 2's commonly had some mk bits on though?

    According to James Taylors Original Stag book....... under Production Changes

    MKII cars are LD20001 onwards (page 87)
    Matt Black tail panel introduced at this point

    LD40001 - Body-coloured tail panel re-introduced (Page 88)

    Of course, the reality of what came out of the factory gates had some subtle differences

      Black rear panel was introduced on Mk 2 cars from LD20001 (Oct 17th 1972) along with side stripes, smaller rear bumper plinth, number plate lights in bootlid, new dashboard gauges, etc, etc.

      Rear panel reverted to body colour from LD40001 (Sept 4th 1975), along with alloy sill covers, push button trip reset, new handbrake grip, tufted carpets, different seat belt centre catch, alloy wheels standard with black fixing nuts.

      As you say, there was some blurring, but there was never a Mk3.

        changeover dates were a bit blurred between the "mk's" and that the last Stags were a mk 3 - the latter one being complete news to me. mk 3 was never a real description, but latest cars had a number of minor changes that mean they are sometimes referred to as mk 3s

        It's true isn't it that the earliest mk 2's commonly had some mk 1 bits on though?yes

          Ian, I think your talking about what we nicknamed a Mk 1 1/2, like my car, And I believe DJT's (Dave's) Outwardly a Mk2 but with some Mk1 bits on, namely the door locks, no hazards lights etc..

          Hows yours, have you got it home yet.

          Ian.

            I think i'm right in saying that according to Triumph or rather BL there was no MK1,2 or 3 just stags with slight changes over the production years

                The people who painted mine told me it's Jappened Black as in the Black screws you get, sounds feasible !

                    Cheers guys.

                    The question now is ..."is it matt or satin?" Is there a paint number in any of the books?

                      i thought a matt was water based and a satin oil based paint. so the same really just what do you clean you paint pot with?

                        painted mine in satin, as matt was too dull and didnt look right

                          Matt = Blackboard paint

                          Satin = slight sheen

                          Better with satin IMHO

                            Satin gives the right look.
