As alluded to in a couple of recent posts, I have now bought a Stag and will be paying the balance this coming weekend and getting it trailered home early next week.
It hasn't been on the road since around 2002 just after it had had a full restoration done by E Wards - since then it's been in a dry garage under a cover. I had a really good look round it and from what I can see the chassis, suspension turrets, main floor, inner / outer sills, bootfloor, A and B posts are in top-notch condition with no signs of rust. The panels have areas of blistering on them but it seems just surface and the seams between panels seem prefect - all assuming that my trusty magnet is right. The paint is a bit flat and I am going to see how it responds to a good t-cut and polish and then maybe look at dealing wiht the blistering areas later and getting them blown-in. I am no sprayer so won't be doing this myself!
The interior is in pretty good condition and the hood and frame were new at the restoration - there is no hardtop so I will be looking for one in due course. Not sure about the electrics but the battery is brand new and certainly most things seemed to work. Drivers electric window was very slow to lift and gives up the ghost 3/4 way up.
Now where the purists are going to hold their hands up is that....gulp.... it is fitted with a reconditioned RV8, Holley and BW35 box (supplied new by Rimmers) and exhaust etc. This work was done by Favershams once Wards had finished with it. It turns over but doesn't fire and, obviously, I can't tell what drive shafts, diff etc is like. The suspension bushes seems to be poly, so hoping they are fine.
All my life I have been a purist and wouldn't have countenanced anything other than an original engine but, for now, I will be keeping the RV8 as it has allowed me to get into a Stag for decent money.
I am sure that I will soon start to ask all the usual questions and recount tales of woe, but I have a good feeling about it.
(Edited out a couple of typo's etc)
