    Ebay is a funny place

    See listing 200515971711

It has a new block/crank. Position unknown on the heads, it has a new starter/alternator and nothing is guaranteed.

You can buy a complete engine less the add-ons from Newark for £2,200 ish and have a good guarantee.

You can have your engine completelyrebuilt by a recognised expert with a good guarantee for £2,300 plus shipping.

I bid £750 for this, I might have gone to a £1000 but was down the pub with no signal on my iPhone.

It is beyond me why someone would spend 80-90% of guaranteed retail rate with no comeback. I am alone in that view or do you see this as fair value?

I'm with you Graham on this. Of course the deal may not go through as the auction process and the need to "win" means that folks sometimes bid more than they really want to and then suffer some buyers remorse afterwards andrenege on the deal.

If it goes through then good result for the seller.

I suspect some people just don't do any research.

I once sold a second hand Sony Vaio battery on eBay for twice the price of a new one from Sony's web site. Two people got into a biding war. £135 for a second hand battery

It's not a bad price for a complete engine and gearbox with all ancillaries but a bit of a gamble. Wonder if whoever bought it was converting a car back to a triumph V8 or restoring a shell that came without drive train?

I agree eBay can be a funny place and if you are selling you can often get people getting carried away and paying over the odds. However in this case you are getting an engine and gearbox with ancilliaries. if someone has been to look at it they may have satisfied themselves that it is all as described. i suspect the winning bidder wanted the complete lot as they were converting back to a TV8 from a non original engine. its not the silliest price I've seen paid by any means. I sold a defender 300tdi engine and gearbox about four years ago (complete with all ancialliaries etc) for #2300, i had never even run it - I bought it to put in my Landy but never got around to it. the guy who bought it from me was delighted with it.

The golden rule when bidding on eBay is decide on your limit and stick to it - don't get carried away.

C'mon the block had been painted a nice shiny silver so clearly well worth it!

Seriously that particular item could well have been a real bargain...it's just a bit of a risk.

I have noticed that a seperate world exists within eBay on some things and buyers don't always do their research externally.

My wife has listedfurniture on e-bay with a buy it now price and the first bidder has bought the stuff at the end of the auction for much more than the buy it now price just because other people started bidding, crazy.

                    Hello everybody,

I wrote some books on old guns (mostly Walthers) , which can still be bought from the publishing house or bookshops today. Sometimes I see some of them auctioned for more than the price in the shops.

In that case I reckon that the seller or one of his frienfs were bidding on that engine - just to make sure it does not go too cheaply.

                    Kind regards, Dieter.

nobody ever gets carried away bidding on anything I ever sell !

In fact I find that everthing I sell is almost worthless and everything i want to buy goes for a fortune
