    Steering wheel vibration 60-70 mph

    Hi all

I have spent the morning trying to chase down an annoying vibration I get through the steering wheel at 60-70 mph I have read all the threads so far and have spent a fair bit of time on this so here gos

All the obvious causes I have inspected and dismissed, top mounts, lower ball joints, wheel bearings, Discs ( less than 1 thou runout by dial gauge ), bushes All replaced with poly, wheels balanced and checked for roundness. nothing loose, I am down to two possible causes
    1. Drop links -these have poly bushes at the topmount but the Ball is still orig.
    2. Lower steering column-there is play on the lower column not a lot but it is still there, as far as I am aware the lower shaft is original, there is also the standard play in the top column bush.

So what is the likely hood that one of these is the culprit, I have to say that my helper this morning who has had his car even longer than me at over 30 years also has this problem.

    Hi Chris

A friend of mine had this kind of problem for ages and couldn't trace it. It was only cured by replacing a tyre which had developed a "lump" on the inside of the wall.

One other thought..are all your wheel nuts identical? When I boughtmy StagI had two steel and two alloy on the same wheel..that caused an inbalance and in the early days meant I had to make sure they were attached opposite each other!!

    Hope you find it

Dave's comments are good advice, particularly the wheel nuts - often overlooked. One other quick check, try moving the wheels from front to back and from the back to the front to see if it changes location

        Hi Chris

Does your car by any chance have tubes fitted?

I had this problem and part of the cause was inner tubes which caused a huge inbalance in the wheels.

After refurbishing the whole front suspension just after I purchased my Stag, I found it had a steering wheel wobble. I knew it was not the bushes or bearings as all were new and the wheels had just been balanced. To cut a long story short, I found that one of the tyres had a barely perceptible flat spot on the tyre, probably due to it standing in the one place on the tyre for too long. I found it by ensuring that the brake pads were fully clear of the disks and then spinning the wheels with the front jacked up of course. As the wheel spins, look at a fixed point on the floor or on the car as the wheel spins and you may see the tyre going in and out. Replaced with two new tyres and all was fine after that.

          Hope this is understandable

          Jim.
