could it be that your oil is on the way out, if it was hot and degrading then it would register low pressure, then as it cools it would thicken up again restoring the pressure? just a thought i could be wrong

Could just be a dodgy sender. Worth fitting a new one before panicking about engine rebuilds............

I've never had this happen on the Stag but have on other old cars I've had. My wife had a 74 Opel Kadette coupe and the oil light always flickered at idle - it even said in the owners manual it might do it and it's OK!As long as it doesn't do it at revs I don't think it will be doing any harm. However having said that if it didn't do it before then something's changed so worth looking into.

            Hi

I would fit an oil pressure gauge any old one would do for test. Just use the oil switch take off. This would tell you what pressure you have. I believe 10psi at tick over is about the limit you are looking any less and you may be looking at large repairs.

            Regards

                Hi,

I'd dispense with the useless temp gauge and fit a combined capilliary oil pressure and water temp gauge. Had one on mine for years and it is foolproof and accurate. MGB's used to have them!
It's pretty easy to fit and available from(among others) Rimmers.

After you have fitted a pressure gauge and if the pressure is below 10 psi, try fitting a new oil pump if you current one is old. Certainly cheaper than a bottom end rebuild. Craig

Absolutely agree as fitted mine a couple of years ago. One thing (and applies to any oil pressure gauge), leave some looped capillary coils behind dashboard. I pulled my dash out several times and guess it weakened the end joint - I was bewildered to spot the fuel gauge was leaking oil.....

Yes you'll have to take off exhausts. I changed oil pump and put new seal in pressure sensor last year. Not very difficult took about 2 x hours remove refit .
