Well that's it all back together now. Managed in between showers as my garage at the house is full of kids ****e.

Now snug andback in my other garage, and well worth the effort. Amazing what a bit of patience, etch primer, black spray paint can do. Oh and the breaks seem to be fine as well

I had same on National Day, ir didn't sink but could "pump" it down. I took master cylinder off, there was a very small weep into servo but I swapped it out and been fine since. If you do overhaul, the internal circlip is difficult.

On another note, over ND I had another brake problem. Do a 3 point turn on full lock and driving on the first press on brake went 1/2 way down. Its repeatable, now I know to expect it and check first. Traders had different thoughts (coupled with pumping brake above) but now reckon its either pads moving or rear shoes. Ideas?

Paul, I had the same problem with the brake pedal sinking after turning a corner. I traced it to the front stub axles not being torqued adequately in the vertical links. This fore & aft movement of the stub axle was knocking the brake pads back. I never split the suspension to check, but I do wonder if the holes in the vertical links are now oblong as it can still happen a bit under heavy loads

HiGavin, thats an interesting thought, was it easy to spot ie could you rock the wheel to make it move?

Hi Paul, the only way I could replicate it was making a manoeuvre such as a 3 point turn or making a hard turn on the road. After that my pedal would have sunk to the floor on the first press. If I drove straight after that I had the perfect pedal but if I made a tight turn again, away went the pedal. It took me a few years to make the link with tight low speed turning. Rocking the wheel did not show this fault up so the MOT never new of the fault. It had a lot of mechanics stumped. It was entirely my own fault as when I rebuilt the car I tightened the stub axles as much as I could off the car, but once mounted I forgot to torque them full :?. Hope this helps, Gavin.

Hi Gavin, certainly does thanks. It does sound similar ie 3 point turn and very consistent.Only started on Nat day when I also noticed the pedal starting to sink. The suppliers reckoned master/servo but also suggested changing the front hoses in case they were ballooning on stretch (did that, no affect, cylinder change has stopped the sinking tho).

I changed the front dampers last year but don't recall which bits I dismantled, but could tie up with your findings. Which bolts/nuts in particular did you find the problem with?

Paul, I just needed to tighten the 2 large stub axle nuts in the centre of vertical links & job done. (the book says torque to 65ft/lbs)

Hi Gain, just had a look - on the one side I can only see the large centre nut (not 2), I didn't touch this but did loosen the 4 strut retaining bolts. Is this the nut you mean?

Hi Paul, yes, that's the one. I meant to say the single large nut in the centre of each.

Thanks Gavin, I'll give it a try and let you know how I get on.

                    Cheers

Got rid of that after reading "the most dangerous part of the car was the nut behind the wheel."

Gavin, tried tightening the big nut and the smaller bolts, the big nut only tightened a fraction each side - I'll give it a try later.
