Two MOTs passed in one day, but

Both my Stag and Debs Minx passed their MOTs this morning with no advisories so good news there, however as Ive mentioned on another post, Im currently running with the hard top on and between 40 and 50 mph the car becomes unbearable to drive with a severe drone and vibration coming through the car its terrible. I had a good look under the car whilst it was on the ramp and I could not see anything that may be causing this.

The exhaust on the drivers side where it passes through the sub frame may be touching but the sound and vibration is far worse than I would have thought that could cause

Ive recentlyreplaced the prop, both drive bearings on the diff, fitted Datsun drive shafts with new hub bearings and ujs and it now drives like a heap of s**t. I will adjust the exhaust but Im beat on this one and totally p*i**ed off with the car to be honest.

    Hi Dave,
If the exhaust pipe is touching the subframe, it can make a hell of a racket. Maybe for a quick test, you could pack it off with something forgiving (and fireproof!), and see if it sounds any different; before losening all the system to allow th pipe to be centralised.

Have you had the prop balamced?

The prop is a brand new CV jointed one and it has balancing weights on it so I assume its balanced but Im not ruling it out.

Moving the exhaust across slightly will not take too much effort so will try that but I think the vibration is far worse than the touching exhaust could create, hope im wrong though.

          Hi Dave

You will be amazed how much noise a touching exhaust can make, I had this on a MK2 2500 and that and the diff nose bearing made driving it unbearable.

I had problems with a diff nose bearing. I found that the housing had gone oval and was distorting the bearing. This was caused by welding work to strengthen the nose extension. Is that a posiibilty on your car Dave?

I had a diff nose bearing go on a 2.5 PI, and that droned horribly, the bearing had turned in the housing so that was scrap too.The diff flange could be moved up and down about an eigth of an inch:shock:

Could be the diff nose bearing, changed it years ago so will check that, guess its strip the rear end time again The clunk that I thought the new prop had cured has also re surfaced but it only does it on take upand not every time so thats pointing to the diff as well.

Took it out tonight and at 50 if I stick the clutch in the vibration stays until the speed drops to below 40 so its pointing to the drive train some where.

To make matters worse a guy I know whos selling his Stag came round and I took it for a spin, its an auto and it drove lovely, really smooth and quiet, driving hishas at least proved that mine isnt right and its not just me expecting too much. My manual box is also a lot noisier in general than his auto box.

                  Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear you are having problems after doing so much work. I have to admit I try and limit the amount of work I do in 'one go' before driving the car for a reasonable distance to see if there are any problems with the work I've just done...

I recently replaced the suspension on the Stag and had some strange noises / drone coming in after the car had been driven for a while. I ended up paying for new bearings all round. It now looks like it was actually just the front brake pads 'kissing' the front discs and getting warm... I only realised when I replaced the pads with a different make, as they were making the wheels very black...:?

Having had a look at your posting I would start with the exhaust - I've suffered with a badly fitting exhaust for years and its amazing how much vibration it can put through a car, even on deceleration. I'd then try the prop - just because it is new, doesn't mean it isn't faulty... as I have found with many new Stag parts. Have you still got the old one you can throw on to try?

                  Regards
                  Chris
