Please tell me all I need is a little grease on my widgets......

Well, Happy New Year to you guys. Sorry I have been off line for the past month or so, but I had to take some time out to deal with Christmas due to family demands, and then I had to go to Marrakech for week. It's one of the problems of growing old gracefully - holidays have to be taken now and then. Ah well. Anyway now I am back I shall once again be able to provide advice and encouragement to all the NYSOs out there (Naive Young Stag Owners) and also provide test pieces for you Master Technicians, just to keep you on your toes you understand.

The first problem of the year I have encountered (apart from the non stop, persistent rain) is a sticking throttle on my auto car. Sometimes when I start the car the engine races up to 4,000 revs before settling down again. It's all very exciting but at the same time a little un-nerving. It can also provide me with difficulties when driving - to accelerate towards red traffic lights when one is hoping to slow down also gets the adrenalin flowing. So, obviously something is sticking. I am hoping you are all going to tell me that a little application of some grease or oil here and there will solve the problem, and I am really, really hoping you areNOT going to tell me the carburettas will have to be taken apart for investiagtions.

    HiRobert

I would start by oiling the throttle cable (frost etc do nice cable oilers) then the check the linkage mechanism for movement and oil, pay close attention to the choke cable's as one of these gives a fast idle and may also need oiling or replacing?

If none of this works then maybe the carbs do need a strip and rebuild but if the were fine before I would suspect the cables or linkages are at fault.:?

      Robert,

Had the same problem. Raced a BMW away from the roundabout exit and scared myself silly as I approached the red light at 4000rpm and climbing . I found that on top of the accelarator pedal there is a pin, this was tagging against the carpet of all things. Pushed it all back into place, stuck it down and greased / oiled the pin, no roblems since. This may not be your problem but it's worth checking as it's quick and easy.

I had a bit of a sticky throttle problem as well. I had just reinstalled the carbs and the end of the throttle cable was pushing against the linkage causing enough resistance to stop it going back to idle. A blip of the throttle was enough to get it to unstick, but slowing down, changing down and blipping the throttle at the same time was a bit tricky!

take it from an experienced cable user, grease out performs oil in a cable cos it stays were its supposed to stay, all bike shops will be able to sell you a mini grese gun and grase for around 15 quid, ask for PARK or finish line model. they are designed with cables in mind

I had a stuck throttle some years ago, it was after using the kickdown to overtake (auto) and the end of the cable (carb end) had hooked behind one of the rods. Real hairy moment taking the oncoming roundabout at 60mph. Now always check that the end of the cable is straight.

Thank you for all those replies. Many of you have obviously suffered from exactly the same symptoms, so I shall try the various remedies one by one and hope to solvethe problem. I too have found that a blip on the throttle calms things down, so maybe the throttle cable is whereI should look first.

I am pleased to say that you have all passed your first check test of 2008 with flying colours.
