I have “lurked” on this forum for some time and been impressed by the knowledge displayed and the dedication of members to their cars. I am now in need of some advice myself, hence this post.
I am moving house and, as the new place does not have a garage, I need to sell my 1972 Stag (Triumph V8 engine) urgently. It was in regular and reliable use for weekends and holidays until 2001 when other family commitments caused me to park it away in my garage where it has been ever since. It was last run and driven a couple of years ago but is currently a non-runner due to the carbs being gummed up.
The body, paintwork, hood and chrome are all in top condition although after 6 years they need a clean. The mechanics were in top condition but probably require light overhaul as it has been sitting.
It is a manual with overdrive and the clutch tends to stick but it may well free off once the engine is running (it did the last time I ran it.) The interior is good, although both front seats could do with reupholstering. The car is yellow with black interior and hood. There is a hardtop finished in black vinyl which requires a tidy.
I have quite a bit of history for the car. It was bought new by an army officer who took it with him to Monte Carlo when he retired. It was brought home in the mid-nineties and restored. It was partly finished when I bought it and finished part-professionally and partly by me. The only non-standard items are subtle enhancements such as stainless steel exhaust, electronic ignition, halogen headlamps, a towbar and an immobiliser.
I am looking for some help please in selling. My problem is that I don’t know where to market it. I don’t have time to advertise it in the club magazine. I have found a couple of adverts in there where they will buy a Stag “Dead or Alive” and have emailed them but without response. Anyone have any experience of these types of deals? I have looked on Ebay and there always seem to be a fair few Stags for sale but it seems to be a bit hit-or-miss as to whether they sell and, while I have experience of selling on Ebay, I wonder if this is a good place to sell a classic car? Does anyone have any suggestions of anywhere else to advertise?
I am also having trouble knowing where to pitch a price, not really having kept up with the current market price. Obviously, I have to sell quickly but don’t want to give it away and would like to set a fair price that reflects its condition. Does anyone have any suggestions given the details I’ve given above?
Apologies for the long post but I feel that I need to give sufficient detail in order for anyone to be able to help. Would really appreciate any replies.
Regards
Pat
