    LPG on Triumph V8

We are entered in CT's Round Britain Reliability Run - 1st - 4th October. We have entered the stag, but I would like to use LPG as it would save a lot in fuel costs. I know there are a few LPG stags out there, but can anyone show me some pictures of what was fitted and where? I am not sure where to put the mixers, as with the funny angles used forcarb intakes there is no room to fit 1/2" spacers.

On the rover v8 its easy as its all straight lines!

    Anyone able to help?

    Thanks

    David

Can't help I'm afraid, but good luck with the run. Quite fancy giving it a go myself next year. Let us know how you got on.

pretty sure the costs of the conversion would out weigh any savings, even in the long term, where you thinking about putting the tanks?

I have done the run before - a few times now. First time in a toledo, then a sprint, and more recently in a big saloon. It will be my first time in the stag, but could be really nice if the weather is good - especially through scotland. We have always have 3 people before, but the roof down should keep the two of us awake!

This year it is for 'Mind',the mental health charity, so a good cause that is closer to more people than you think.

My dolomite and big salloons are all converted, and I have a spare LPG kit, I am just unsure where to plumb the front end in. Tank wise I have a "doughnut" tank that will replace the spare wheel, but they are very small capacity. I am hoping to get a cylinder tank across the rear of the boot, or maybe even a large tank in the back seat just to give us the range for this event!?

Currently I am painting a towbar, so I have something to mout the LPG filler to without hacking a 3" hole in the bodywork!

I travel about 30,000 plus miles a year for work, so if I get the stag LPG'd I will recoup the "cost" very quickly as i will use the stag for some of that! I am more concerened about the effect on the engine as it killed the head on the Triumph straight six - extreme valve seat recession.

i think i'm right in saying this but LPG raises the engine temp, if this happens then it would affect the running. i know a few people who have had it done on land rovers, all modern engines and have noticed the rise in temp, its only small but it could affect the stag engine, thats all i know really, perhaps you could try julian or chris they are knowlageable

My 2.5PI estate was fitted with LPG and strombergs when I got it, and the head was also knackered with valve seat recession. This is, I believe, a big problem with the straight six. I spoke to someone at the national day who had the same problem so fitted an unleaded head which lasted even less time than the original:shock:

It obviously depends on the specification of the inserts. Stag ones are good enough for unleaded, and I will find out the hard way soon as my stag powered estate is still fitted with the LPG system, I just need a pair of bigger venturies as the car was originally fitted with 1 1/2 inch Strombergs, and a bit of head scratching about how to fit them. Must be easier than fitting EFI though

I think that was me - at the national a few years ago! One 2.5 is on its third head, the other now has a rover v8!

I wasnt clear from your post. Is the estate on LPG on strombergs? Or on EFI? Do you have any pictures if on carbs - where are your current mixers?

RBRR prep continues - have bought HID lamps today - Half of the run is at night, and the existing stag lamps are quite corroded, so new lampsand HIDs - its going to be like daylight -I hope!

Just a wind deflector to find (or make) now and then fit all this stuff :?

The estate is on strombergs, but I havent got round to fitting the new mixers yet. The old ones are still fitted to the straight six carbs.

I was going to run the estate on injection, but when the water pump seal went on the estate, then the stag engine seized its jackshaft and snapped its timing chain (in the same week) I decided to swap the carbs onto the estate and fit the injection to the stag.

One other possibility is to use the mixer I had already bought for the injection and fit that to the snout of the air box, but I think it will take too much trouble to seal the airbox, and if it spits back it will create a bigger bang!

                    Hi Steve

That windbreak looks good. How easy is it to install and remove? Can it remain in position when you raise the soft top?

                    Regards

You would have to take it off to put the hood up but that ounly take 30 seconds and it folds in half ,I like the fact that the mesh is kept taught with the sold frame as some of the other ones i have seen allow the mesh to go a bit wrinkly.Only takes 2 pieses of velcro strip and 2 elasic straps to fit it.

                      This is the model

                        Hi Steve,

I wrapped a black bootlace around the interior light retaining screws, and merely thread it through the gap on thethe hinged part of the mesh upright on my A4 screen. A knot on the end of the bootlace after cutting it to length stops it pulling out in use, and no need for straps or velcro. Worked fine for last l2 months with no problems.

                        FWIW

Like your style Peter, definalty more than one way to skin a cat.Which ever way you do it, it makes it a different car on the motorway.I was looking for quite a while and they all seem to go for about £140 if in an auction so if you see one for sub £100 as a buy it now like I did i would grab it.
                          Cheers Steve

You are right Steve, works very well on the motorway particularly. I bid on E bay and got it for £97 inc. carriage.
I use the rear side windows as well on cold days, so a bit of belt and braces, which does no harm.

The vapouriser, petrol solenoid and "mixers" are on. We have drilled the elbows and introduced the gas directly infront the carbs, so they should pick up a nice venturi effect.

Hoping to tee into the heater hoses tonight, and connect the wiring, then we can see if it will run on LPG

Also managed to helicoil the long bolt that holds the throttle support bracket - nice and stable now.

Running out of time.... just the rest of the LPG kit, HID lamps and lambda sensor to install - hopefully!

                              RBRR starts 7pm friday
